Marilyn Stehmeier Obituary

Marilyn "Sugah" Smith Stehmeier Charleston - Marilyn "Sugah" Smith Stehmeier, 90, of Charleston, was called home by the Lord on March 26, 2022. She was born in Charleston on July 6, 1931, and lived there her entire life. Marilyn will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her husband of 70 years, Herman W. Stehmeier; her children: Kathie Kimsey of Duluth, GA, Cheree Thomason (Dr. Mack Thomason) of Greenville, SC, and William "Bubba" Stehmeier Jr. of Charlotte, NC; and six grandchildren: Faithe Kimsey, McKee Thomason, Katie Thomason; Summer Stehmeier, Kimi Stehmeier and Taylor Stehmeier. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, DeWitt Talmadge Smith and Dell Smith Rogers; her son-in-law, Dr. Bo Kimsey; and her grandson, Chas Thomason. We are blessed with the thought that as she entered heaven, Marilyn was rejoicing in seeing her Lord and Savior along with her sisters and brothers-in-law. She was a longtime member of St. Johannes Lutheran Church, where Marilyn could be found assisting with the Tea Room or ministering through food and fellowship. She was an active Shriner's wife being a member of the Omar Greeterettes, and enjoyed many fun times hosting parties in their home. Marilyn was a secretary at First Baptist Church School where she enjoyed helping the faculty, staff, and students. All that knew Marilyn, knew of her love for the Lord, her family, her church, cooking, a good joke and her warm hospitality. Marilyn was often heard saying, "I'm Charleston born and Charleston bred and when I die, I'll be Charleston dead." Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, in the St. Johannes Lutheran Church, 48 Hasell St. at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Wednesday in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Johannes Lutheran Church, PO Box 31927, Charleston, SC 29413. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

We are so sorry to hear of Mrs. Stehmeier's passing. She was such a lovely lady. I enjoyed the time I had with her at First Baptist when she was training me.. She was a card.. One thing I remember was that she never put her lipstick on until she got to our office. She said she always liked to kiss her husband when he dropped her off... They were so loving!

Kathie, Faithe and Mr. Stehmeier, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Kathie, I was so sad to see that you lost your husband. He was such a good man...

I know Mrs. Stehmeier loved her family deeply. She will be missed by many..

Prayerfully,
Jozhan & Frank Atkinson

I was a student at First Baptist Church School and grew up in St. Johannes Lutheran Church. Mrs. Stehmeier was always present with a kind word and a smile for everyone and she will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by my family.

The day we drove past our `soon to be´ house on Johns Island and our friend Rusty stated that is my Uncle Willie and Aunt Marilyn´s house right next door, we knew we were in the right place. To us she was Aunt Marilyn from that moment forward. We bought the house, had our children there and were blessed beyond measure to have a 3rd set of grandparents living right next door. They embraced our family like it was their own. It was a day of honor when Uncle Willie presented me with a key to his huge workshop, and in the most thick Charleston accent told me "Tom, anything in there you need you take it". We had our kids birthday parties under their picnic shelter in the back yard. Uncle Willie could fix just about anything that broke, a great skill when you buy an older home and don´t even know where to start! Aunt Marilyn was a great cook, when you entered her house there were always cakes, cookies, her famous Sweet Tea (maybe that is where her nick name came from) and lunch frequently consisted of butter toasted Reuben sandwiches...ours and Uncle Willie´s favorite. She taught me her `secret recipe´ for Hot Sausage Dip, a recipe I use to this day and give her top billing when asked for the recipe! She called our first born, Thomas, the Little King and treated him like one. There was nothing she wouldn´t do for him. When Emma, came along she was the Little Princess and got the same treatment. She exuded joy, she loved fully and got great pleasure in making other people happy. She didn´t like crabs, but if she liked you, she would sit right next to you and pick those crabs better than anyone I have ever seen, and give you all the meat! You knew how much she loved her `real´ family by how her face would light up whenever a name was mentioned. Her greatest earthly love, however; was her husband Herman (Uncle Willie to us), he was her knight in shining armor and she loved him unconditionally, and he her. Our family was so blessed to be an adopted part of the Stehmeier family. She was a Grand Lady, and we will miss her.

Mrs. Stehmeier was one of the teachers who kept track of me long after the classroom days were completed. Her talents were many and her smiles always given even if it was the start of a conversation about making the world "Charleston" a better place to live. Prayers for the family and many friends she helped along the way.
