Marilyn Goodman Miller Morehouse MURRELLS INLET, SC- Marilyn Goodman Miller Morehouse, 92, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., passed away peacefully on New Year's Day, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Lynn Crawford Morehouse, Sr., whom she affectionately described as her best friend. Marilyn was born on February 19, 1931, in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she had a simple yet idyllic childhood. Marilyn was surrounded by friends and family and was quite popular. Marilyn enjoyed music, reading and good conversation. She was genuinely interested in people and always had a loving and kind spirit. Marilyn was gifted musically at a young age. As a teenager, she taught piano lessons to younger children, one of whom became a concert pianist. Marilyn was involved in the Chillicothe's performing arts scene accompanying singers on the piano in local music revues and sometimes playing on the local radio station. A 1949 graduate of Chillicothe High School, Marilyn was awarded a music scholarship to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Marilyn remained focused on her studies until she met a handsome college student. Marilyn's good friend from Chillicothe brought home a fellow classmate named Lynn Morehouse from Sewanee. What was supposed to be a friendly outing quickly turned into something neither Lynn or Marilyn anticipated. Lynn Morehouse described Marilyn as "the most vivacious and prettiest girl he'd ever met." Now, this was the era of letter writing. There were no emails or texts; and there were very few phone calls. Marilyn and Lynn were in each other's presence only four times prior to their wedding. One of those times being her visit to his college in Sewanee and his additional visits to Chillicothe. It was a whirlwind courtship as the 5th time they were together was the day they were married. On July 21, 1951, at Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Marilyn and Lynn said "I do." They began their lives as newlyweds in Miami, Florida, but eventually settled in South Carolina where they raised their six sons named Lynn Jr., Brent, Daniel, Bruce, Kent and Douglas. Marilyn stayed busy for many years running their household and raising the boys while Lynn worked in the wholesale plumbing business. Marilyn was a devout Christian who was active at St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence, S.C. Marilyn served dinner each night at the dining room table as it was the only table big enough to hold all six boys and their friends. Her life was fully focused on her family and her faith. In retirement, Marilyn and Lynn moved to Beaufort, S.C., where they enjoyed meeting and socializing with other retired couples. They joined The Parish of St. Helena where Marilyn spent time on the altar guild making sure all was ready for communion services especially during the holiday season. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Marilyn and Lynn enjoyed having the freedom to travel in their retirement. Canada, Ireland and Costa Rica were some highlights but London, England, was one of Marilyn's favorite places. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip across the big pond aboard the Queen Elizabeth II from New York to London. Marilyn also spent those years in Beaufort hosting her grandchildren. She enjoyed asking questions about their lives and their interests. Marilyn was known for having a compassionate disposition and an entertaining vocabulary using words like wonderful, delightful, lovely, marvelous, and glorious in everyday conversations. She never expressed an angry word to anyone. Her grandchildren describe Marilyn as a saint. Her love of reading never waned; from The Wall Street Journal to the Post & Courier to countless books. Marilyn shared her love of reading with her grandchildren as well. She believed that if you have something to read you would never be bored. She was known for having a tote in her car filled with reading material just in case. Her sons would be quick to tell you that Marilyn also loved the Peanuts comic series by Charles Schulz; her favorite character being Snoopy. Marilyn is preceded in death by her great-grandsons, Nathan Morehouse Miller and Jai Thomas Morehouse; and her parents, Flossie Goodman and Carlisle Miller. Marilyn is survived in death by six sons; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Mark Miller. There will be a private funeral service for family and close friends at St. Philip's Church in Charleston, S.C., on Friday, January 5, at 11:00 a.m. There will be a graveside burial in Chillicothe, Ohio, at Grandview Cemetery.
