William Evans Obituary

William Evans, Jr. CHARLESTON - William J. "John" Evans, 80, passed away on October 21, 2025, in his birthplace of Charleston, South Carolina. John was admired by all who knew him, respected him as a mentor, cherished as a husband, son, and brother; and remembered for his generosity, sharp wit, and gift for storytelling. He earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina, where he remained a devoted Tar Heels football and basketball fan throughout his life. He met his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Cromartie Evans, while she was a graduate student at Duke University. Betty tragically passed away from ALS at age 36. John spent many years in Apex, North Carolina, where he was active in community affairs, served on local boards, and was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International. He also supported the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In 2023, he returned to Charleston and became a resident of the Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community, where he thrived among new friends and family. He is survived by his brother, Thomas M. Evans, and sister-in-law, Theresa, of Charleston, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. A private family celebration of John's life will be held later this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Employee Appreciation Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities, or a charity of your choice.

We sure are going to miss you here in Myers Hall. I will certainly miss our daily after lunch chats. You weren't supposed to leave us so soon, but we are comforted knowing that you have been reunited with your beautiful Betty. Bishop Gadsden won't be the same without you! We love you, Doc!

This one is tough. How are we going to get along without you coming into our office everyday to visit. We have so many stories, crazy stories, of your life that you shared with us, so we will cherish them. I still can´t believe that we won´t see you everyday. I believe we loved you from day one. I pray God has you wrapped in his loving arms. I will see you again Doc. I love you, Lisa.

John was one of the best neighbors I ever had. That man could tell a story, and had many to tell! He was a good friend, and I´m grateful that I got to know him and spend time with him in Apex.
