Margaret Johnson Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Johnson, 88, of Brooklyn, NY, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Margaret Johnson, affectionately known as "Sister," was born on May 21, 1937, on Yonges Island, South Carolina. She was the youngest child and the only daughter born to the late Peter Johnson and Irene Maxwell Johnson. After an extended illness, Margaret was peacefully called to rest on January 28, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York.

Margaret received her education in both the Charleston County and New York City Public School systems. Upon completion, she began working at Charleston's historic Cigar Factory, where she developed the strong work ethic that would define her professional life. Margaret returned to New York City and earned her degree from the City University of New York. She married and began raising her family, first welcoming her son Dana Lamont, followed by her daughter Lori Renee.

Margaret dedicated her career to education, serving as a beloved teacher in New York City at the George Brower School, PS 289, in Crown Heights. Teaching was not just her profession, it was her calling. She took special care to ensure that every child felt supported, and encouraged, often giving extra time and attention to students who needed it most. Her impact extended beyond the classroom and remained with her students long after the school day ended.

Margaret remained connected to her Yonges Island roots, visiting family and friends often. In her quieter moments, she found peace in reading, journaling, and deep reflection, habits that mirrored her thoughtful and introspective spirit.

Margaret "Sister" Johnson leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, who was lovingly committed to her daily care, her daughter, who served as her constant moral support, her three beloved grandchildren: Essence Simmons, Ebony (Darren) Simmons-Beck, and Errol Johnson and five great grandchildren. She also leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and other cherished family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers, Rubin (Tina) Johnson, Samuel (Louise) Johnson, and Rufus (Delores) Johnson.

Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, resilience, and gentle wisdom. Her life touched many, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, former students, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
