Margaret Hoats Obituary

Margaret Hoats WALTERBORO - Mrs. Margaret Shoupe Hoats, 80, of Walterboro, wife of James C. "Chris" Hoats, Jr., passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017 at her home after an extended difficult illness of Alzheimer's. She was under the care of Hospice Care of South Carolina. A memorial service will be at 5 pm, Sunday, June 25, 2017 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Margaret was born in Marianna, Florida on August 9, 1936. She was the daughter of the late John Casper Shoupe and Frances Mayo Shoupe. She was the youngest child of 11 siblings. She retired after 40 years of service from Colleton Regional Medical Center as Director of Social Services. Margaret spent many years helping other people with family crisis. She was a Red Cross representative for the Colleton County Chapter, where she assisted military families and others in need of emergency care along with her position at the hospital. Margaret dedicated her life to the Lord at Adams Run Baptist Church. In addition to her husband of 61 years, she is survived by her children, Jim Hoats of Walterboro and Donna Hoats Rice (David) of Indian Trail, North Carolina; grandchildren, Beth Hoats Barber, Christopher Hoats, Lauren Rice Fitts, Benjamin Hoats, Dylon Rice, and Hallie Rice; along with three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Frank Shoupe of Florida and Sanders Shoupe of Alabama. The family would like to recognize Hospice Care of South Carolina for the excellent care and family support given during this time. A special thank you to Robin Varn, Debra Taylor, and Pam Thomas, along with all staff members.
