Mann Valentine Obituary

Reverend Mann S. Valentine, VI FORT THOMAS, KY - The Reverend Mann S. Valentine VI, better known as "Chip", 63, of Fort Thomas, passed away on December 29, 2010, at his residence. He attended Ohio University from 1968-1970 and graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Philosophy. He then attended Virginia Theological Seminary from 1970-1973 and received his Masters in Divinity. He was ordained a Deacon by the Episcopal Diocese of VA at St. James' in Richmond, VA. In December 1973, he was ordained a Priest by the Diocese of Southern VA at Bruton Parish in Williamsburg. Chip served as a Priest at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA from 1973-1975; All Saints Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA from 1975-1977; Emmanuel Episcopal Church-Brooke Hill in Richmond, VA from 1977 -1979 and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Pensacola, FL from 1979-1983. He also served as Priest of Episcopal Churches in Mobile, AL from 1983-1984; Brewton from 1984-1989; Simpsonville from 1989-1994; Ashland, KY from 1994-2010 and his most recent Church, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ft. Thomas from 2009-2010. He was born October 19, 1947, in Richmond, VA to the late Mann S. (Buzz) Valentine, V and Dorothy (Dottie) Mays Valentine of Richmond Virginia. 1968, Chip married Mary Blair Truesdell of Richmond Virgina with whom he had a daughter; Melissa Blair V. Ruge (Thomas) of Charleston, SC. In 1983, he married Sharon Lee Pope of Pensacola, FL with whom he had 2 daughers: Katherine Elizabeth V. Groce (Luke) of Louisville, KY and Mariah Lee Valentine of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by his three younger siblings; brother, James Hedley Valentine (Carol) of Richmond, VA; sisters, Anne Terry V. Day (James) of Richmond, VA and Mary Robins V Rudacil (Stan) of Scottsville, VA. Also surviving is his granddaughter, Gabrielle Blair Ruge and several nieces and nephews. Chip served his community and diocese in numerous ways. Most recently, he served on the Camps and Conferences Board and the Executive Council for the Diocese of Lexington. He served as the Presiding Judge of the Ecclesiastical Court, and advocated life and dignity in his many terms on the ethics committee at local hospitals. Chip lived his life as a giver to all - a faithful and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, community leader, and priest. After his enormous love for his family, one of his next greatest pleasures was gardening. The abundance of nourishment grown from his beloved garden, from which many friends and family benefitted, mirrored the love with which he nourished those around him. Chip had the gift of making everyone around him feel comfortable, important and valued. His legacy of sharing Christ's love is enormous. His family's sorrow is overshadowed by the joy of knowing he has now heard the words his heart lived for, "well done my good and faithful servant". Praise be to God! Funeral Ceremony will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011, 4:00 PM at the Christ Church Cathedral 116 Market Street Lexington, KY. Sharon,Melissa, Katherine and Mariah,
We were so deeply shocked by Melissa's request for prayers for Chip on the night of his death. You know of and should never forget the important role you all played in our lives while in South Carolina.
We share your grief and lift you all up in our prayers. I posted a small tribute to Chip on my blog at www.fbmin.com. I hope you all will find some comfort in the fact that his passing left a void that reaches across the nation. We send you love and prayer.

We remember Chip very fondly in his time with us at All Saints in Richmond. He was so warm and loving in his ministry to us. He always had a hug or warm smile to share with us! We have followed his ministry through the years and wished that at some time he would come back to Richmond. Our love and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

Father Chip married my husband John and I on December 16, 1989 @ Caesar's Head, SC. and now both John and Fr. Chip are at home with our Heavenly Father. What a wonderful pastor he was to us. I had the honor of seeing Mr. Chip hold his granddaughter on the first day she was born. The look of love and joy on his face is one I will never forget. This kind and wonderful man lives on through his beautiful daughters and that sweet baby.

Mary Robins and Family,

I am sorry for your loss and the loss of a fellow brother in gray from the TJCC Band. We of the TJCC Alumni Band will strike up "Jeffersonian" and "Maroon and Gold" in Capt. "Chips" memory at our next practice. While the drum cadence will fade in the distance, the memories never will.

I knew Chip mostly by reputation but greatly enjoyed the few times we were able to converse in person when he returned to Richmond. His late parents, Dottie and Buzz, were good friends from whom I learned a good many life lessons including the joy and rewards of serving the Church as a layperson.

Like his parents, Chip was a sincere, dedicated, and effective servant of the Lord. I offer my prayers of thanksgiving for his life and service and pray that the Holy Spirit will be ever present and comfort his family and friends. Of Chip one can confidently believe the Lord has said "Well done my good and faithful servant"

As a first cousin and fellow pastor serving the Lord, but living in the "north" for the last 22 years, I grieve we didn't get to spend more time together. I will treasure a memory of talking one afternoon at mattawan 6-7 years ago, about the Lord, ministry, and it's stresses. See you in heaven my friend. Allen Valentine Kemp

I remember Chip very fondly from his time at All Saints in Richmond. I was in the youth group at the time, and he was a great mentor to us all. It's funny that he was only with our church for 2 years, because it seemed much longer. He made a great impression in that short time, and I have thought of him often over the years. My prayers are with your family during this time of loss.

Sharon, Brown and I were shocked to hear about Chip. Still remember those beautiful gardens he planted and tended every year and how caring he was when Brown had surgery. He loved his family dearly and I know he leaves a huge hole in all of your hearts.
