Major McCarty was my principal at Summerville High School during my beginning years of teaching (1968-70). He was truly a great educational leader who set the course for my own 40 plus years of being in education. He was a "servant leader" who cared not only about the educational standards but about the teachers and students.
Wendell and I also enjoyed knowing the McCarty family during those years at Summerville Baptist. Then, the Mohrs moved to Irmo, and our family was fortunate to cross the McCartys' paths again, with Krisy at Irmo Middle/High and Michelle at Dutch Fork Elementary where she had another wonderful McCarty as her teacher, Mrs. Farris McCarty (and I believe it was 4th grade in 1979). When I think of all the educational leaders I've known through the years, I always put Major McCarty up at the top. May God bless you and your family and hold your hand during this time, but take joy in knowing how many lives have been impacted by Major McCarty. Our family is richer and our children (who are both now educators) have been wonderfully influenced in their formative years by both Mr. and Mrs. McCarty, and for that we thank you. The Major was a fair and honest man, at least that's what he said before he burned my butt up. He cared for each and every student that he came in contact with. My heart and prayers go out to the whole McCarty family.

Major McCarty left an indelible print on so many young lives in Saluda by his practical wisdom, his love of education, and his joy in student achievement. He was the best example of positive discipline ever. A gentle giant whose bark was worse than his bite, our school was fortunate to benefit from the years with Mr. McCarty's influence and strong presence. How we loved that man.

Van and family, I have just learned of your fathers death and I know your heart aches. I never got to know your father on a personal basis, however I have got to know his son and the kind of man he is today. From what I have read there is no doubt of the peace he knows now. I know your grief and pray you will be able to celebrate your Dad's passing from this earthly place to a much better place. May God bless you and your family always and may you know we have all of you in our prayers. Elaine and Mike Payne

Van, Susan and Jane, so sorry to hear of your dad's passing on Saturday. It is not an easy thing to lose a parent at any age, our dad will be gone almost a year now. I can truly say you can be proud of the man your father was, he made a big impact on MANY young lives and we are all the better for it. I spoke with Kelley Knotts (Coates) and Debbie Mingus (Nielsen) last night about this. He is leaving a great legacy behind, and we were the lucky ones. Irmo was among the places blessed to have him! Much love and prayers to all of you.

He was truly one-of-kind and will be missed. My prayers go out to the family. Just know for a fact that he will be rewarded for all the good he has done on earth.

McCarty family,
I want to share with you a memory of Mr. McCarty. As a young teacher at Irmo in 1985 I was blessed to work under his leadership. It was apparent that he "walked the walk" as a Christian man. I will never forget coming to him (pregnant with my first child and dealing with a condition that meant I would have to be out of the classroom longer than I had anticipated), fearful for my job and hearing him gently say that my responsibility was to my family and not to worry about school. I will never forget his kindness - I and many others will miss him.

Farris, it was with great sadness that I saw about Major's passing in the paper today. My mother and father, Virginia and Juette Asbill, knew Major better than I did and I know that they held Major and all of the McCarty family in very high esteem.
Major accomplished so much in his lifetime and leaves a great legacy.
Please relay my sympathy particularly to Sim and Dick and all of the family.
