Mabel Scott Obituary
Mabel Olive Scott
November 8, 1905 - April 2, 2012
SALEM - Mabel was born in Wenona, Illinois to James George Henning Wolfe and Jennie Bell Marie Winter. Her parents were very adventurous, moving the family back and forth across the country. When she was only six months old, they left Illinois in order to see the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake and ended up living in a tent city. Most of Mabel's childhood was spent between Tacoma, Washington, Rudd, Iowa and Wenona, Illinois.
By 1918 the family returned to the west coast by train, eventually settling in Salem, Oregon. Mabel frequently spoke about this ride. The trip included soldiers returning home from WWI. She was saddened by the experience due to the cruel irony that many of these young men survived the war only to die as a result of the Spanish Flu on the ride home to their loved ones.
After graduating from Salem High School in 1926, Mabel attended Capitol Business College. Later, her culinary talents resulted in her gaining employment in the homes of several prominent families, including Daniel Fry and Dr. Julius Garnjobst.
Mabel married Eldon Scott in 1936. They owned Scott's Service Station as well as Scott's Signs. Their marriage resulted in two daughters, Sharleen and Carol. She was a devoted homemaker and hosted many holiday dinners for their extended family. Often these occasions included everybody gathered around the piano in order to sing while Mabel played songs from the era. These events were always enhanced by her delicious pies. In her free time, she enjoyed exploring the beaches, streams, mountains and deserts of Oregon with her family and friends.
Mabel will be missed by her daughter Carol (Jim) Woolery; son-in-law Rick Geraths; grandchildren, Debby (Lyman) Rutkai, Tim (Kazue) Woolery, Jacob Woolery, Jeff (Brenda) Jarrett, Shelle (Mike) Pack, and David (Denise) Petersen; 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sister, Lois Seeley. Mabel is preceded in death by her husband, Eldon; daughter, Sharleen Geraths; sisters, Florence Wade and Francis DuFrain; and brothers, James, Kenneth and Ray Wolfe.
Requested by Mabel, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
