We met Mabel on a cruise many years ago and kept in touch with her and Edith (deceased). They were a fun loving pair and we kept in touch, probably for 24 yrs now. We were lucky enough to visit them from Canada a few times and their stories of the Charleston area were always so interesting.
We chatted with Mabel probably just a few days before she passed. We will miss her real southern accent and humour. Rest in peace Mabel. You and Edith will be able to have your daily "happy hour"
together again.

Dear Family,
I am a distant cousin in the McDonald line whom Mabel befriended long ago. She enabled my getting in First Families of SC, SAR and French Huguenot Society. I have been indebted for life, and thanked her, accordingly. I last spoke with her about ten months ago. God bless her and you, and may she rest in peace as a wonderful person and saint.
Sincerely, Carl A. Ellsworth

Aunt Mabel . Dearest Mabel (always told me as a youngster she was not a "table"; as I kept spelling her name wrong due to being dyslexic).

She came into my life when I was born randomly on July 4th 1963 and was asked to become my god-mother. Mabel was my late mothers pen pal from the 1940's when my mother put a pin in a map while at school. She wrote to the mayor of Charleston who put her in touch with Mabel who he knew was quite unwell. They wrote letters very regularly for the next 30 plus years; weekly if not more sometimes. They finally met in May 1975 when mum flew out to visit. Following my mothers passing in late 1981, she so took on the duties of god-mother and kept a lookout for me, I feel very lucky to have had Mabel in my life since 1963.
I have been very lucky to have met Mabel on 6 occasions: in 1979 and 1996 when Mabel visited, and in 1983 (first long-haul flight), 2002, 2013 flew over to celebrate my 50th birthday and finally in 2017 for Mabel's 90th birthday.
Thank you for all you have done for me and my late mother who was ever grateful for your support and kindness during her troubled times and ill-health. Lets the July 4th fireworks this year be just for you.

Dear Mabel, now at peace and say hello to my mother and your dear friend Edith Combes.
Will always have fond memories of you my dearest Mabel, your God-son ...... George ......... March 08 2019
