Ludie Tarpley Obituary

Ludie "Lou" B. Johnson Tarpley N. CHARLESTON - "Lou," beloved wife of Robert "Bob" P. Tarpley, went to her eternal rest on April 13, 2016. Lou was born and raised in Musella, Georgia. A devoted daughter and sister to five siblings, she was the captain and star of her high school basketball team. During her senior year at summer camp, Lou met her future husband of 60 years, Robert, a Petty Officer First Class in the US Navy. As a Navy couple, Lou and Bob made many lifelong friends in their duty stations across the globe. At 29, Lou earned her cosmetology license and practiced her art until 1994. After their retirement, the avid gardeners also devoted time to Habitat for Humanity and their church Peace Presbyterian. She has left behind two children, Debbie Tarpley (Ed) and Patti Connors, and four granddaughters, Morgan, Laura, Sarah, and Audrey. Lou is survived by her husband, Bob, her sister, Betty, and brother, Joe. The family extend special thanks to Diane, Visiting Angels, and Hospice Care of SC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Peace Presbyterian Church of Goose Creek, SC. Family will receive visitors at 3pm Sunday April 17th at Peace Presbyterian Church with services to follow at 4pm also at Peace Presbyterian. Bob, I am so sorry about Ludie! I'm still trying to absorb the fact that she is gone--such a shock! I had no idea that she had Alzheimer's . I hate that you and your family had to suffer so much--it is a horrific disease. No one should have to endure this affliction, especially such a wonderful person as Ludie. She was my dearest and closest childhood friend. We had many a good time playing basketball and spending the night with each other and our Roberta friends. Our 2 summers we attended FFA summer camp, together, are some of my fondest memories, especially the last one, when she met you. She was smitten with you, right away. I'm so glad you had many happy years together. I will never forget her and our friendship! You and your family have my most sincere sympathy.

My immediate family met and became friends with the Tarpley family in Mayport, Florida, when my father was stationed there at the same time as Bob, Lou and the girls. Lou did my Mothers hair for years there, and then the Tarpleys and my family both got stationed in Charleston, S.C. around the same time. Of course my Momma was thrilled, as you see she was extremely particular about who styled her hair, and Lou was the only one that could please her. Lou ended up doing my entire families hair, and I have such touching memories of her doing my hair for my own wedding way back in 1976. When our oldest daughter, Heather was three years old she started going to Miss Arlines for daycare, and Arline was such a gem, that when Debbie and Patti had their children of course they followed Heather right to Miss Arlines daycare. I have such wonderful memories of sitting in the Tarpley kitchen, getting my hair done and talking about all the kiddo's and grand kiddo's. I loved to go out in Lou and Bob's backyard and just marvel at their garden. Beautiful flowers everywhere and the best looking veggies you have ever seen. We all sure do miss those days so much, and we are so very sorry to the entire family and all of Lou and Bob's many, many friends for the loss of Lou. She was such a beautiful and special lady. The world was such a better place because she was in it. I am comforted though, to know that Lou is in a better place with family and friends that went before her, including my own Momma who lost her battle to this same, horrible disease. I pray that they find a cure very soon. With all of our love and sympathy, Mark, Cindy, Meagan Orton, Heather,Jason, Stone Sweatman, and my Father, William Rickard.
