Lucy Baasen Obituary

Lucy Olive "Dot" Berry Baasen COLUMBUS, GA - Lucy Olive "Dot" Berry Baasen, of Columbus, GA passed away Wednesday, April 5, at her home after a long illness and battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and care givers. Mrs. Baasen was born on February 7, 1931 in St. George, SC to the late Thomas Olin Berry Sr. and Imil Smoak Berry. She graduated from St. George High School and then went on to graduate from Winthrop University with a B.S. in Education. She taught school in both Atlanta, GA and Augusta, GA and later was a librarian at Fort Gordon Hospital in Augusta, GA where she met her husband, Wesley Anton Gerhardt Baasen, a Chaplain in the US Army. She followed him in his 20 year army career and finally settled in Cullman, AL, where he pastored Christ Lutheran Church. Lucy, called "Dot" by friends and family, was very active in several women's groups both in the church and the community. She especially enjoyed preparing the flowers for each weekly service at the church. She had a green thumb and was a Master Gardener as she tended many flower beds and shrubs in her yard and at the church. She had an avid hobby of china painting and filled her home with hundreds of beautiful plates, vases, bowls, pitchers and pieces she gladly shared with friends and family. Upon retiring by the golf course in Columbus, GA, she enjoyed a weekly get together with the Happy Achers, a senior social group, to play games and commune together. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother, Thomas Olin Berry, Jr. and her sister, Imil Lanier Berry. She is survived by two daughters, Toncy Baasen (John) Little of Columbus, GA and Katie Tarica Baasen of Birmingham, AL; two stepdaughters, Paulette Westerfield of Higden, AR and Rebecca Wilke of Elkader, IA; grandchildren, Jarrod MacGregor and Jack Wesley Little; two sisters, Miriam Berry Jordan of St. George, SC and Virginia Berry Tompkins of Chapel Hill, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings, TX on Wednesday, April 12, from 12:30pm until 1:30pm. A procession will form to go to Friendship Cemetery in Paige, TX for a graveside service and interment at 2pm. Memorials for Mrs. Baasen may be sent to organizations supporting veterans and their families, a cause very close to her heart. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
