Lucille Newcomb Obituary

NEWCOMB, Lucille Lucille Martsed Newcomb, 89 , formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday night November 20, 2007 following a brief illness. She had been a resident of United Methodist Homes in Binghamton NY since April of this year. Prior to coming back to New York, she and her husband, David, had lived in the Charleston area for over 25 years; they loved the area so very much, it was home for them. For the last six years, Lucille had resided at the Sandpiper Retirement Village in Mt. Pleasant. Lucille was born in Montclair N.J. to Elizabeth and Nicolas Martsed. When she was a young girl the family moved to Cortland, N.Y. where she met the love of her life, with whom she would spend a lifetime, David W. Newcomb, who passed away in June 2001. Upon her graduation from Cortland State, the childhood sweethearts married and Lucille began a long and rewarding career as a first grade teacher at the Unadilla NY Elementary School. As a teacher, she touched many lives and even in retirement she continued to touch young lives by volunteering to teach reading in the Charleston schools. Lucille, or Lucy, as many called her, was a woman of kindness and compassion; a dedicated and devoted wife, mother, daughter, teacher, friend…someone about whom we can say I'm so glad I knew her. She is survived by her children, David Newcomb of Linden, CA and Susan Newcomb of Binghamton, NY, who will forever be so grateful for the wonderful life and love their parents Lucille and David gave them. She is also survived by three grandchildren that loved and adored their Grandma. The family would like to thank everyone at the Sandpiper Village and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care and kindness they gave Lucille while she was there. They also want to thank the compassionate care and comfort given Lucille by the caregivers in New York; they helped her to pass quietly, in comfort and with peace of mind and dignity. She will be laid to rest beside the love of her life, her beloved husband, David. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 28th in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL. Entombment will follow at Mt Pleasant Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home one and half hours prior to the service. Everyone that knew Lucille will remember her love of animals, especially dogs. Those who wish to remember Lucille may consider a memorial donation to John Ancrum SPCA, 3861 Leeds Avenue, North Charleston, SC 20405. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

To the family and friends of Lucy's, we wish to express our deepest sympathy. She and her husband, David were two of the nicest people we've ever met. Former neighbors of ours we have never forgotten. We know she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

I was so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. She was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. It's been a long time since I've seen her, but I'm sure she had that glowing smile to the end.
