I served under General Vaught in the 24th Mech Inf Div. He made us PROUD to be Soldiers when being a soldier wasn't the popular thing to do. A real Testament to his leadership. I often told my wife at night that I would go to hell with General Vaught because I know he will bring us back after giving Satan a what for. This man not only cared for us, his soldiers but also our families. Once my son was in the hospital at Ft. Stewart and I kept having duty as all soldiers do, so much so I never could go see him. Somehow General Vaught found out, to say I got a week off so quick it would make your head spin is an under statement. He loved "his soldiers" and we loved him. I still do till this day. I thank God for being able to serve with such a great leader. My heart goes out to his family. Not only his Blood family but his family he served with as well. God Speed General we will meet again someday, If I am good enough.

Dear treasured, longtime friend---you can see that it was my gifted, thoughtful daughter who found this "Guest Book." I'm using it first to remind you that I care now - - I cared then and always will. Next my phone # is (704) 552-8697 and e mail: [email protected] - - Please "touch base" with me when you can. Guess you know about my 1/15/13 stroke - - most would have died & they say I did for a minute - - but after leaarning what hell is like & acing the DMV drivers test I'm living alone (don't like that a bit), managing and thankful for a multitude of blessings. Too much - - point is I want to know about you, Lee, grands, etc.,etc. Love you, Don

Regrettably, I only had the privilege of getting to know "The General" in 2006, but the all too few times I had the opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest, and to grouse about the rampant ignorance in all levels of local government, he always embarrassed me with my lack of knowledge in comparison to his.

He was a gentleman of the highest order, and the World, especially Horry County and Myrtle Beach, will be far less informed and much less accountable without him.
