Louis Richter Obituary

Louis Tobias Richter, Jr. CHARLESTON - It is with a heart full of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Louis Tobias Richter, Jr., who departed this world peacefully on March 21, 2025, at the age of 86. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 AM Friday, March 28, 2025, at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road, James Island. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, with a 6:30 Vigil Service, Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. The Rite of Committal will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. There will be a celebration of life announced at a later time. Born on October 26, 1938, in Charleston, South Carolina, Louis exemplified a life devoted to service, family, and community. A proud graduate of Bishop England High School, Louis never lost his passion for music, masterfully playing the clarinet as part of the Dixieland Trio during his school years, and later, for a short time, The Charleston Community Orchestra. His spirit of camaraderie extended to his roles as a member of the Elks Lodge and a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a longtime member of Christ Our King parish, where he lived his faith with joy and dedication. More recently he was a member of Nativity Catholic Church on James Island. Louis served his country honorably in the National Guard and the United States Army, where he was called to active duty during Desert Storm. He continued his service with the Army Reserves, demonstrating a commitment to duty and leadership that resonated throughout his life. Louis cherished his long career as a letter carrier with the U.S. Post Office, where he built lasting relationships within the community he served. In retirement, he delivered medicines and medical supplies to those who were unable to access these items themselves. He was a loving father to his sons, James Louis and Michael Cullen Richter; and daughter, Audrey Elliott Richter; and a devoted brother whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met. Louis enjoyed various activities that filled his life with joy, from bowling and golfing to music and laughter. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. Survivors include: Sons, James Louis, Sr. and Michael Cullen; Daughter, Audrey Elliott Richter. Sister, Azalia LaTorre; Brothers, Ronald Leroy (Sandra), Ernest Allen (Elaine), Gary Francis (Diane). Louis had 5 Grandchildren and 11 Great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: His father, Louis Tobias Richter, Sr.; his mother, Ernestine Jones Richter; his youngest brother, William Ripon Richter; and sister-in-law, Susan Barley Richter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or to Wounded Warriors. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, (843) 766-1365.

Louis was a wonderful cousin-in-law! We met about 58 years ago and his joyful, kind and warm nature never changed. He loved all of our family and showed that in many ways over all of the years. Jimmy, Michael, and Audrey, I am holding you in my heart and prayers. I pray your many happy memories of your dad will comfort you during this very difficult time. Our daughter, Amy Hanna Mickles, lives in New York but sends her sympathy to you. My sister, Linda (Elliott) and brother-in-law, Billy Richter are homebound in North Carolina but asked that I pass on their condolences to all of the Richter family. John and I are both sick and deeply regret that we cannot attend the services but we will be thinking of all of you at that time.

With love and deepest sympathy,

Debbie (Elliott) and John Hanna
