The last time I spoke with Louis was when he was a substitute teacher at Alston Middle School over 10 years ago. I remember thinking then how great he was with the kids. He was such a "people person"-always smiling and lifting everybody's spirits. Louis had a way of brightening up a room, making people laugh, and bringing out the best in all of us.

Back in high school when a lot of us were thinking of moving away after college, he always asked us why we'd want to leave such a great place and told us there was no place better than Summerville. He truly loved his hometown and the Greenwave! Although my family and I did move away, we recently went back to visit the new North Charleston Fire Fighter Museum and Educational Center. What a wonderful place to bring children and remember Louis's legacy. May God bless the Mulkey family. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers daily.

Louis was a good friend of mine when I was a kid living in Summerville. He lived right down the street from my house at 212 S. Gum Street. He was a few years older than me, so he was more like a big brother to all the younger guys in the neighborhood. I have a lot of good memories playing backyard football with him; he was always "full-time QB", so most of us guys were on the receiving end of his strong passes. I’ll never forget his dog “Ellie”; she never left his side back then. He went on to play quarterback at Summerville HS and coach JV football and basketball. He was a hero to us long before he died in that fire. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, brother, Lauren and his family and close friends.

To: Lauren, the Mulkey family, and friends, I am so sorry to hear about Louis! He was a delightful person. I met him a few years ago when my best friend was dating a fellow firefighter. We would go up there and visit with all them and Louis especially sticks out in my mind. He was always so friendly and funny! I remember him speaking a lot of the students that he couched. He loved what he did, He loved you Lauren and he loved those kids. Louis was a great man and inspiration to so many. Please know that you are all in my prayers.

I was so saddened to hear of our loss of Louis. He was a classmate of mine in high school and memories of him have come flooding back. He had an infectious smile that could bring even the saddest classmate out of their darkness. He was quick with a joke and cared about each person he came across.

Some of my fondest memories of Louis are from the bus rides that the JV basketball players and cheerleaders would take to away games. He would create hysterical songs off the top of his head and get the entire bus to sing along.

I had since lost touch with him, but it sounds like he continued to touch many lives. I certainly feel blessed that he had touched mine. My thoughts and prayers are with Lauren, his family, and all other people who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Lauren, I am utterly sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts continuously and I wish I could take your pain away even for just a moment to spare you some relief.
You and I were so close growing up in Damascus and in the last days those memories have been flooding back to me. I never met Louis and I am so deeply sorry I can’t recall memories of him other than those others have so kindly placed in the guest book but I have so many memories with you.
You are a strong and beautiful woman that has the utmost respect from those who know and love you. From the start of 7th grade when we met you knew where you wanted to be and how you were going to get there well before any of us did. I can’t think of anyone who met you that didn’t say to themselves, “Wow, that is one impressive girl”…now woman ;)
I found an old news paper clipping from the Damascus High School paper right before graduation that had you winning all of the class titles…Best Dressed, Most Likely to Succeed, Cutest Couple. I couldn’t help but chuckle. I will be sending that to you so you can have a well needed laugh too.
Though years have passed since we last seen each other you are always in my heart. I am here for you when ever you need me. I can tell from all that I have read about Louis that he adored you and how deeply in love you both were. Lauren, you are blessed to have married such a wonderful man and hero that is loved by so many, just like you. I know in time with God’s grace and healing you will make it through this but yet a better person for getting to love so immensely. I love and miss you. You and the Mulkey Family will be in my thoughts and prayers for some time to come.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

I met Louis briefly at a HAZMAT training class last August, but it was apparent, even in that short week, that he was an amazing man, and a true leader. He had an honesty about him that most people don't possess. He spoke about Lauren with such love and adoration, and talked about the kids he coached with such pride and dedication. Lauren, the Mulkey family, and Summerville High, you are in our thoughts and prayers, and be comforted in knowing that the rest of the country is mourning with you. I was also asked by Brent "Rex" Ellen, one of the Canadian Fireman that attended our class, to pass on his condolences as well. God bless.

As referees, my husband and I watched Louis grow up playing basketball at Summerville Baptist Church. He loved being out on the court. He was a team player, a true leader, and just the nicest young man you would ever want to meet.
He would always smile and joke with us (even though we were not most people's favorite). We considered him the finest example of what a young man should be like.
We watched as he took on his roles helping coach at SHS. The intensity, humor and love for his student athletes shined brightly.
To Louis's wife, parents and all who have been touched by knowing him, we ask that God give you strength. We are deeply sorry for your loss. As we write this we still see Louis laughing, smiling and doing what he loved. Remember the good times of this terrific heroic young man. We will never forget him.

Coach Louis Mulkey will go down in history as The Best Loved Coach at Summerville High School. Louis loved life and his life was young people, yeah he was a Fireman but even there at the Station Louis was still Coaching.

There is no greater gift one could give than to give his life for a fellow man. Louis not only "gave" his life this past Monday night, but Coach Louis Mulkey "GAVE" his life to every young person who had the priviledge of being Coached by him on the field, on the court, and in the classroom.

I love you Louis.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Louis, but after hearing all the wonderful things said about him from his friends, neighbors, colleagues and the list goes on, but the most touching ever are the thoughts from his students that make me wish I had! He definitely has made a difference in many lives. Even if you didn't know him, you gotta love 'em! No wonder you married him. June 22, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

TO THE MULKEY FAMILY:
LOUIS WILL TRULY BE MISSED BY MANY. I ATTENDED HIGH SCHOOL WITH HIM AND MY FATHER WAS HIS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL. UPON HEARING THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH, WE BEGAN TALKING ABOUT THE LAUGHTER AND KINDNESS THAT LOUIS SHARED WITH EVERYONE AND THE LOVE HE CONTINUED TO SHARE WITH THE CHILDREN OF SUMMERVILLE! EVEN THOUGH HE IS GONE PHYSICALLY, WE KNOW THAT SPIRITUALLY AND IN THE HEARTS OF MANY, LOUIS WILL ALWAYS REMAIN. GOD BLESS & KEEP YOU IS OUR PRAYER, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.

I did not know Louis, but I do know his Dad. Louis could have been no less than a Great and Giving Man. May the Love and Happy Memories shared lighten The Mulkey's and everyone's pain as soon as possible.

Coach, I don't know where to begin. You were our caretaker. You didn't lead us down the right path, you forced us down the right path. I'm so truely blessed to have had you in my life. You were our coach, mentor, teacher, and our hero. Then you went beyond that, and became our friend. If I grew up to be half the man you were, I'd call what you did for us a success. You cared so much, for so many people. You are our hero. All of us wanted to be just like you. I love you, Coach. I'll see you once again one day.

My hat is off to the all firefighters that risk their lives to save ours.Remember if you feel like he is there, he is, you will always have your personal guardian Angel. Louis you truely left your mark in the Summerville community. You wre a great mentor to my children, they looked up to every word you said. You taught them that academics always came first, and the competivness to win and be the best, also how to lose with pride. You will be truley missed. The Herriott Family
