Louis Compton Obituary

Louis Compton SUMMERVILLE - Louis Compton, "Lou", 101, of Summerville, SC, passed away September 8, 2017, at Summerville Medical Center. Born May 6, 1916 in Riverside, IL., Lou graduated from Northwestern University in 1939 with a BS in Accounting. He moved to Grand Rapids, MI., where he worked for Standard Oil. At the onset of WWII, he enlisted in the army, where he became a First Lieutenant and served as an Ordnance Officer in Belgium. After the war, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and pursued a career with Ernst & Ernst as an accountant and Harshaw Chemical as the assistant treasurer. After retirement in 1979 he and his wife moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He began a second career with the Broward County Parks and Recreation Department, from which he retired for a 2nd time after 20 years, at age 91. Lou was an avid golfer; while living in Ft. Lauderdale he had a permanent tee time at Hollywood Golf Course every Saturday and Sunday morning, and he always walked the 18-hole course. Lou developed a love for ballroom dancing while living in Ft. Lauderdale. After moving to South Carolina he bowled on a league and became an avid Wii bowler. He will be remembered for his passion for staying mentally and physically active. Lou is predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Dorothy Griffen Compton. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Werner of North Charleston, SC (Andy) and son William Compton of Lake Worth, FL (Kristina); granddaughters Amie Sparks of Asheville, NC., and Megan Buyer (Paul) of Ladson, SC; step-granddaughters Niki Fairfield (Rhet) of Brunswick, GA and Jessica Werner of Orlando, FL; great-grandchildren James Sparks, Annabelle Sparks, Charlie Buyer, Jack Buyer, Gavin Fairfield and Tristan Fairfield. Numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and good friends will hold Lou's memory in their hearts as well. Funeral and burial to be held by Brooklawn Cemetery in Holland, MI., at a future date. Barbara, Zachary and I loved you Dad very much. It was always such a joy to see his face light up. One of Zach's favorite memories of Lou is teaching him to bowl on the Wii, he did love the time spent with Lou. Prayers for you and the family. It was an honor to know Lou.
