Lonnie Garvin Obituary

Lonnie Garvin, Jr. AIKEN, SC - Mr. Lonnie Arnold Garvin, Jr., 83, beloved husband of Jennifer Etheredge Garvin, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at his residence. Lonnie Garvin was born in Charleston, SC, in 1933 the son of Lonnie Arnold Garvin, Sr. and Hazel Brewer Holcombe. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. He served in the United States Army National Guard as well as the United States Marine Corps. Upon graduation from USC, he moved to Aiken to work for his father's company Southern Mortgage Company which he eventually took over. Years later he was a co-founder of Aiken Mortgage Company, Riverbluff Realty and Southeastern Mortgage Consultants. During his career, he specialized in residential mortgages, development of residential neighborhoods, and HUD financing for assisted living facilities and market rate apartments. Two of his projects that were instrumental in the revitalization of Main Street in Columbia buildings were the historic renovation of the Tapps and Barringer Buildings. Lonnie was active in the Aiken County Home Builder's Association, the Aiken Jaycees., the Aiken Cotillion, and was a member of Houndslake Country Club and the Outing Club. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Etheredge Garvin, his daughter Mary Mark Perkins (Tim) and his son Scott Lawton Garvin (Mary), his grandchildren Whitney Perkins Schaffner (Christian), Shane Perkins (Mary-Francis), Rachael Perkins, Rebecca Garvin, Laura Garvin, Monica Garvin, and Maryann Garvin, and great-grandchildren Heidi Perkins, Baker Perkins, Palmer Schaffner, Lawton Schaffner, and Mary Claire Schaffner, the mother of his children Ann Dorris Garvin, his brother Douglas Schroeder Garvin, his sisters Mary Arnold Garvin, Olivia Garvin Post, Annette Garvin Hair (deceased), his sister Sandra Holcombe Turner, and his brother Ladson Holcombe (deceased). Lonnie was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bird hunting and offshore fishing. He had a love of the ocean and all the adventures it contained, or that he created. He made sure that his family and friends experienced those adventures, which were often unpredictable and resulted in great stories, most of which were true. He had a passion for all things Gamecock, and enjoyed attending USC football, basketball, and baseball games - he rarely missed one. Lonnie was best known for his contagious laughter and his incredible gift of storytelling. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the USC Aiken Lonnie Garvin Sr. Scholarship Fund, 471 University Parkway, Aiken, SC 29801. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 5, from 2:00-4:00 at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC 29801 (803)642-3456 Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
