Now that I have retired from my career in education (librarian, adjunct professor, substitute teacher), I have returned to my passion, i.e., storytelling. Little did I know that many years ago, when Ms. Simms encouraged me to read and write, that those two skills would become so important to me, not just as a hobby but as my retirement career. Soon after her transition, I dedicated several of my performances to Ms. SImms. I find it only fitting to dedicate other presentations as well and will do so. Surely somewhere in my subliminal mind, I know that this great and totally selfless teacher was there at the beginning of my storytelling career. Thank you, a million times, thank you, Lois Simms. I pray that you will continue to rest in power and rest in peace.

To the family of Miss Lois Simms, Your loved one was respected and loved by many. Miss Simms taught me English at CHS. I loved English and I loved her. She demanded respect and she demanded that you learned. She was small in stature but you knew she meant business. She cared about her students and we in turn loved her for that. Take comfort in knowing how many lives she impacted for the better. Our lives were made richer by walking in her path. Deepest sympathies to you.

Although small in physical stature, Ms. Simms was a giant in exemplary character. I was not one of her classroom students, but being in her presence as I grew up made me a student of her "everyday" example of strong womanhood, sense of self and love of community.

My condolences are extended to her family and friends in their loss of someone whose presence was so valuable.

Sincerely,

Lois Simms was my homeroom teacher for four years, and English teacher for three, at Burke High School. She was such an inspiration to me, as she went about the business of trying to teach me the importance of academic discipline which was no small feat, given my rebellious nature. She especially encouraged me with my creative writing and years later told me how proud she was of me for becoming a storyteller and librarian (I didn't even think that she noticed). I think of her often, especially as I near the end of MY teaching career. Thank you, my dear sweet lady. Rest easy-job well done.

Early this evening I shared with a friend my sadness with the reduction in cursive writing and penmanship and thought of Me.Simms and the required use of fountain pens. One can only imagine the spiritual connection I experienced, when a few hours later, I came upon her obituary.
Ms. Simms was not only an extraordinary teacher, but she was a lady full of grace. I am recalling the lessons taught to me as a student at Burke as well as a student in her Sunday school classes at Zion Olivet. She also had a passion for music and writing.
To Ms. Simms' immediate family, be comforted knowing that Ms. Simms was a virtuous and phenomenal woman who influenced the lives of many.

I remember her buying a car and learning to drive while she was at Charleston High. About two weeks later, someone stole her tires and left the car up on blocks. What a sweet lady. She and Mama will always be loved by the 70's students and teachers at CHS.

Miss Simms was the sweetest person you would ever want to meet or know, although she threw me and one other girl into a den off male wolves. I still talked, but not as much, even got into a fight. She was so soft spoken. REST-IN-PEACE Miss Simms. My deepest sympathy to the family

Ms. Simms was my English teacher for three years and my homeroom teacher for four years at Burke High School. She was truly one in a million. Of all the wonderful teachers I was blessed to have, she stands out in my mind as the one who tried the most to instill in me a sense of structure and self-discipline (this MUST not have been easy, given my rebellious nature). She also identified in a me a talent for creative writing way before I knew I had it. She once told me how proud she was of me for becoming a professional storyteller, and here I thought she hadn't even noticed. I'm so glad that I had a chance to thank her for all of this before she left us. Rest easy, my dear teacher. I will always remember you, especially as I approach the end of MY teaching career.
