Lisa Brandt Obituary

Lisa Marianna Lunney Brandt JAMES ISLAND - Lisa Marianna Lunney Brandt, 37, was granted her angel wings on the morning of July 26, 2011. Lisa was born on November 7, 1973 in Charleston, SC, daughter of Samuel William and Betsy Ward Lunney. She graduated from James Island High School and was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Lander University. Lisa's life would seem too short to many but those who were touched by her understand that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Lisa was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was diagnosed on October 31, 2000 with a terminal brain tumor and was only given 6-9 months to live. However, God had other plans for her life! She was able to go on to finish her education, graduating from MUSC with a Master's degree in Biomedical Science. She was told she would never have children, but she became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl named Hailey Elizabeth on March 31, 2004. Lisa later even returned to her alma mater and was a professor in the biology department at Lander University for a season. She was an avid lover of nature and marine biology. She adored classical music and walks on the beach. She had deep loving compassion for her family and helping those in need. At the time of her passing, she was a 10+ year brain cancer survivor. Lisa was preceded in death by her father, Sam Lunney. She is survived by her loving husband Michael Brandt and daughter Hailey; mother Betsy Lunney, sister and her spouse Tammy and Howard Duncan, brother Sam Lunney Jr., 5 nephews and 3 nieces. A funeral service will be held at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun St., Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 3:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406 or the American Red Cross, Carolina Low Country Chapter, 8085 Rivers Avenue, Suite F, North Charleston, SC 29406. We had not seen Lisa since she was just four years old. Her Father Sam, however, was like my little brother as we were raised together up until his mother died and he went to live with his Uncle George Lunney. I knew Lisa as a bright and beautiful young girl who grew to womanhood in a way to gladden the hearts of her parents. In the Lunney tradition she was higly intellegent, heavily science oriented, possesed a high moral sense and was devoted to her family. May she always be remembered for those attributes.

Lunney Family and Mike and Hailey:

I cannot express what I feel over Lisa's passing. My regret that I wasn't there for her in these past difficult years, my love for her that never changed, and my heart break for the loss you all must feel. I so want to be able to share stories with Hailey of what her Mom was like as a child, and teenager so she would know what kind of friend she truly was to me. I am happy to know I will see her again. Love you all, and please let me know of anything I can do (even if just to talk about the good times we've all had with Lisa).

It has been many years since I worked at FJBC with the youth and children groups and Lisa was part of the youth group. I was saddened to read her name in the obituaries; but what a tribute was written about her life, her mission, her faith, her family, and her illness. May you all feel her presence and love as you lean on God to comfort you. blessings, Lynn Brown-Conklin(previous preshool children's minister, FJBC)

Mike, Mrs. Lunney, Tammy, and Sammy,

My heart breaks to hear the news of Lisa's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of her from long ago that I have treasured. I was blessed to spend the time with her that I did. You will all be in my prayers. I wish I could give you a big hug, Mike. I can not even imagine all that you and Hailey have been through on this journey and the pain that you are feeling now. I pray for God's grace strength for you.

With love,
