St. George - Linda Peters Hartzog Howell
Linda Peters Hartzog Howell, 79, of St. George, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on January 27, 2026, at her home. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her peaceful passing.
Linda was born on December 15, 1946, in Charleston, South Carolina, the daughter of Mary Grace Infinger Peters and Isaac Mervin Peters, both of whom predeceased her. She loved her momma and spoke of her often in her final days of illness. It is without a doubt that we know that she has joined her mother, and they are rejoicing being together again in the presence of the Lord.
Linda graduated in the Class of 1964 from Harleyville Ridgeville High School and went on to study one year of nursing at The Medical University of South Carolina. After nursing school, she worked for a brief period as a seamstress at Carolina Girls Wear. She then went to work for Edisto Electric Cooperative, where she worked for almost forty years, retiring in 2009 as the office manager in the St. George branch. She loved her customers, co-workers and years spent at Edisto Electric.
Linda was very active in her community and church and enjoyed the company of many friends in her healthier days. As a member of the St. George Bridge Club, commonly called "The Grits Sisters," she without fail attended the meetings every two weeks for almost fifty years, one of her favorite past times. The Grits Sisters were promoters of St. George's Grits Festival, and they publicized the hometown festival by riding in parades throughout South Carolina. Linda was also a member of the local Businesswomen's Club, where she served as an officer for many years.
Linda was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She enjoyed helping and taking care of others. She thought of others first, freely giving of her time and efforts in this life on Earth. She lived with grace and beauty, and always with a little sparkle, hair fixed and makeup on, particularly her mascara and her lip stick, which she believed to be a staple of a southern lady. She was lovingly referred to as "Hollywood" by her close family. Her striking sense of style served only to enhance her beauty, which radiated profoundly wherever she graced; it was an outer beauty rivaled only by that which could be found inside.
Linda cherished her grandchildren, Mary Grace, Emma and Thomas, retiring early with a mission to actively engage in their lives, one in which she excelled in all areas. She found great joy in spending time with them. Linda, who they lovingly referred to as Nanny, could be counted on to attend every play, game and tournament that took place, whether near or far, without fail. A steadfast cornerstone and matriarch of her family, Linda set a shining example of what it means to selflessly be there for others.
Linda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald William Hartzog. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Thomas Robertson of St. George, and her grandchildren, Mary Grace Robertson of Beaufort, Emma Connor Robertson of Charleston and Thomas Matthew Robertson, Jr. of Nashville. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Peters Wagers, and her many nieces and nephews and their families. During her days of illness, Carol, her Aunt Helen Infinger Minus, and Cousin Mildred Hughes Heatley, were devoted visitors and helped brighten her days. For that, and to those who also visited, her family is eternally grateful.
Linda was also fortunate enough to find happiness again with her second husband, Kirklyn (Lyn) Hardee Howell, Jr., who also predeceased her. From that union later in life, she enjoyed and loved a stepdaughter, Rebecca A. Howell of West Columbia, a stepson, Kirklyn H. Howell of St. George, a mother-in-law, Henrietta Young Howell of St. George and a father-in law, Kirklyn Hardee Howell, Sr., the latter having also predeceased her.
Said in such few words and filled with the grief of losing a most wonderful human being who deserves thousands more, Linda will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Life really will not be the same. Lewy body dementia is an isolating and unforgiving illness. Linda, however, lived with grace, courage and strength until the end. She and her family are grateful for her loving caregivers, Apollonia Johnson, Nashelle Cusack, Oretha Drain, Ashley Cokley and Shana Bourhill. Linda's final days were made better because of them and the care that she received through Heartland Hospice and her nurse, Kaye Holman.
A service and burial will be held at Old St. George Baptist Church, February 6th, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10 am followed by the service at 11 am with internment following immediately thereafter, where she will be laid to rest by Donald William Hartzog.
