She was raised in Huger, South Carolina. She was educated in the Charleston County School System and graduated from Cainhoy High School in 1955 and attended Brooklyn College in New York. In the late fifties, she migrated up north for better opportunities. She met and fell in love with Keith Franklin, Jr. They were married on November of 1965; they raised four boys and a daughter was raised by her mother in South Carolina. In January of 1972, she returned to Charleston to begin a new phase in her life after a divorce. She would find love again with Paul Miller and they were wed in 1985. He is now deceased. While in Charleston, she also worked for the Charleston County School District also with the Department of Social Service as a nurse's aide.
