LeRoy Baker Obituary

LeRoy Randolph "Roy" Baker, Sr. N. CHARLESTON - LeRoy Randolph "Roy" Baker, Sr., 92, of North Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on October 5, 2024. "Sonny," as he was known to his family and old friends, died peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved wife and children. Roy was born September 5, 1932, in Mt. Croghan, SC, and attended Murray Vocational School after his family moved to Charleston. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War and discharged honorably to marry the love of his life, his bride of 70 years, Elaine Buckheister Baker. Roy retired from Shop 38, Charleston Naval Shipyard, as a Marine Machinist Quarterman, and was a Past Exalted Ruler of Charleston Elks Lodge #242. He had a remarkable talent for building just about anything, enjoyed fishing in his jon boat and tinkering in his garage. He was also a long-time Atlanta Braves fan, watching games with his beloved every chance they got. His favorite pastime of late was holding his bride's hand while listening to Willie's Roadhouse. In addition to his parents, LeRoy Clate and Bessie Coney Baker, Roy is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sarah Frances Smolinski ;and sisters, Caroline Rogers, Elizabeth Brosamer, and Mary Catherine North. Roy is survived by his beloved wife; daughters, Cheryl Aden, Susan Zellmann, and Deborah Simpson (Matt); and son, Roy Baker, Jr. (Kim); grandchildren, Benjamin, Mark, Daniel, Amanda, Candice, Kayla, Olivia, Rowan, Jacob, and Ronnie; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Tommy "Bud" Baker (Rita); and favorite brother-in-law, Stephen Buckheister (Kathy). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Rd., North Charleston, SC. His Funeral Service will be held at the Chapel on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 11 a.m., followed by his Burial at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lutheran Hospice at www.Lutheranhomesscfoundation.org, or Friends of the Hunley at www.Hunley.org.
