Leonard Greene Obituary

Leonard A. Greene CHARLESTON - Leonard A. Greene, of Charleston, SC and Highlands, NC, passed away suddenly at his home on September 14, 2023. Born March 27, 1947 in Vienna, Austria to Sam and Regina Greene, Lenny soon found his lifelong home when the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Charleston. Lenny attended Meminger School and Charleston High before departing to earn his BSEE at Georgia Tech and an MBA at the University of Southern California. During the Vietnam War, Lenny honorably served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he was initially stationed stateside, then in Indonesia and Taiwan. After the end of the war, Lenny volunteered with the Peace Corps and spent time working with USAID in Afghanistan from 1977 to 1978, through the Saur Revolution and the initial run-up to the Soviet-Afghan War. Upon returning to the United States and to his home turf of Charleston, he put his MBA to use in founding his own electrical engineering firm, Orbital Engineering. Outside of work, Lenny was an avid sportsman, hunter, and cyclist, and loved to spend time with his many friends. After retiring and devoting himself full-time to his friends and hobbies, Lenny split his time between Charleston and Highlands, NC, where he found his peace with his beloved partner Barbara Wade. Lenny is survived by daughters Chloe and Sophia Greene, siblings, Harlan, Karen, and Tom Greene, and long-term partner, Barbara Wade. A memorial service will be held at his home in North Charleston on Monday the 18th at 5PM. In honor of Lenny's peace work, memorials may be made to Vostok SOS (vostok-sos.org) to aid those affected by the war in Ukraine.

One evening in January, Lenny decided it was a good time to install LED strip lighting beneath the lip of each stair leading to the porch. It was a warm night, flowers beginning to bloom, their scent drifting through the air. He put on some jazz, a local group. We finished about 2 am, without his back pleading for relief. I felt close to him, repeating the procedure, stair after stair, not much talking. He felt there was no time to waste, things had to be done right away. Of course the stairs were dazzling.

When Lenny visited , we had fun. I remember riding on his motorcycle as a kid. This life we have is very short. It seems he lived it to its fullest.

Lenny was one of my best friends. We worked together at Fairchild making semiconductors before he left to make spy electronics. One year in Palo Alto ten of us started a cooperative dinner group. Every two weeks one of the ten would cook. He needed a roommate, so found one who was a chef. Next door was a holy rollers church that he visited once. His property was on a half acre, worth a fortune now. He rode to work on a motorcycle. His sister Karen and brother Tommy were there at the same time. Then he went back to Charleston. So sorry to see him leave. Years later I visited him twice for a month each. We had a great time, although his back was disintegrating. Lenny would think of some project at 10 pm and we would not stop until it was finished. Every night he would cook some difficult meal, perhaps Thai or Chinese. Barbara Wade would drop in for dinner and then three of us would work on some project.
I miss him.

It made me so sad to hear about Lenny´s passing. I have known Lenny since I was an exchange student in 1985. I lived with him and his family on Sullivan´s Island for a year. This was a beginning of a lifelong friendship. He came to Sweden several times and visited me and my family and we visited him in the US. I remember in particular one time when Lenny was coming to Sweden for our son´s Bar Mitzvah and we had asked him to read the Torah. Lenny said it would be an honor to read but he needed to practice since his Hebrew was a bit rusty. So he practised and read beautifully on my son´s Bar Mitzvah. Lenny was an amazing person. We will always remember Lenny in our hearts. He will be deeply missed.

In my 35 year career, Lenny was my first professional mentor, and was the best engineering mentor in my memory. Fond memories of work at Oribital, I had a good experience there and he taught me lots. I am sorry he's gone too soon.

I was so saddened to learn of lenny's death. I rode several long distance bike rides with him and other biking friends and laughed at his travelling companion (a toy racoon) as it bounced along over the miles. Lenny will be missed but memories of him remain and will always bring a smile.

I loved him so very, very much!!! We both loved good food and great music. I will NEVER forget him and the good days we had. He had such a good heart! 3 days before he passed I took him shopping at a local store. We were checking out and a UPS guy came in to get snacks etc. The UPS guy asked to use the restroom. While he was in the restroom Lenny added all of his items to our bill as a surprise for that young guy. That´s what kind of guy my boss was!! This picture was taken at Highlands Smokehouse... a truly amazing day! He always said "Love is my religion". Rest in peace my dear... rest in peace
