Leon Rabin Obituary

RABIN, Leon Leon J. Rabin of Charleston, SC and New York City, died on March 31, 2005 at 94 years of age. He was the retired owner and operator of Leon's Men's Wear and President of Dawn's Inc. in Charleston, and Chairman of Rale Stores in SC, NC and Newport News, VA. The funeral will be held Monday, April 4, 2005 at three o'clock in J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Chapel. Interment Emanu-El Cemetery Maryville . Mr. Rabin was born on May 14, 1911 in New York City, a son of Hyman and Anna Rabin. He graduated from New York City schools and attended New York University. He was married for 64 years to his beloved wife, the late Ann Mazo Rabin. He was a life member of the Charleston Elks Lodge, and also a life member of Friendship Lodge #9 Masonic Lodge. During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard. During his lifetime, except for the last few years when he was ill, Leon was very active in the Jewish community and the greater Charleston business community. He was a founder of the Booster Club of the Jewish Community Center and in 1955, he served as its president. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Center in the 1960's and 1970's and was a charter member of Synagogue Emanu-El, as well as a member of the Hebrew Benevolent Society. In addition, Mr. Rabin was a member of the Board of Directors of the Retail Merchants Association and was its uptown Chairman for many years. He is survived by his son and daughter: Elliot Rabin and Eileen Rabin Sorota both of New York City; one grandson: Joshua Rabin; two granddaughters: Alexandra J Sorota and Caroline A. Sorota; one brother: Morris Rayburn of Enfield, CT; one sister: Lynn Koenig of Charleston, SC. Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Leon J. Thank you uncle Leon for the few albeit fond childhood memories being at your house with aunt Annie. So much fun your horses and I remember leaning to ride for the first time. For a little kid growing up in NYC, it was a treat for me and one I'd never forget.
