Leo Mercer Obituary

LEO MERCER Leo Mercer, age 87 of Chadbourn went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville. Final rites will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Chadbourn Baptist Church with Reverend Danny Russell and Reverend C.F. McDowell, III officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. He was the son of the late Bailey and Lottie Hinson Mercer and the husband of the late, Irene Bullard Mercer. Mr. Mercer was very civic minded in the community serving as mayor of Chadbourn for several terms, four years in the NC House of Representatives, county and city schools boards, and retired from the US Post Office after 33 years of which he served as postmaster for 23 of those years. He was also co-owner of Mercer-Worthington Funeral Home (Worthington Funeral Home) until his retirement in 1984. He leaves to cherish his memory, a daughter, Gwendolyn Mercer Sanderson and her husband, Charles of Lake Waccamaw; two sons, Kenneth L. Mercer and his wife, Libby of Village Mills, TX and Kipling Sherrill Mercer and his wife, June of Monroe, GA ; seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. Memorials may be made to Chadbourn Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 504 Howard Street, Chadbourn, NC 28431
