Lawrence Weathers Obituary
WEATHERS, Lawrence Lawrence Martin Weathers (82) of Bowman died March 19, 2007 at The Oaks in Orangeburg following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Bowman Southern Methodist Church with Reverend John William Griffith officiating. Burial will follow at the Bowman Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Weathers was born in Bowman March 26, 1924, the son of George Whetsell and Gladys Shuler Weathers. He graduated from Bowman High School in 1941 and attended The Citadel. He served in the United States Army as Sergeant from 1942 until 1944 in Italy in the European Theatre of Operations. Mr. Weathers was President of Weathers Farms Inc. He was a charter member of Bowman Southern Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Stewards and as Sunday School secretary- treasurer for thirty-three years. He served as director for the S.C. Farm Bureau Dairy Division, and as board member for Edisto Farm Credit Bank, Orangeburg County Development Board, and Palmetto Milk Producers Association. He received Clemson University's Leadership Award and was inducted into the Dairy Hall of Fame in 1990. Mr. Weathers was named Electric Cooperatives Man of the Year in 1968 and he was selected to the Marquis' Who's Who in America. Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Frances Landrum Weathers; four children, Landy and wife Susan of Bowman, Virginia and husband Charlie Vandagriff of Monterey, California, John Martin and wife Denise of Townville, Hugh and wife Blanche of Bowman, eight grandchildren, Sarah Rettew, Jennifer Haren, Susanna, Merrill, Landrum, Gill, Edward, and Julius Weathers; a brother, George Whetsell Weathers, Jr. of Orangeburg. His sister, Virginia Weathers Thompson, died March 9, 2007. Pallbearers are his four grandsons and nephew George W. Weathers III, Bobby Rettew, Tom Haren, and John Helmke. Honorary escort will be the men of the Adult Sunday School Class, the Weathers Employee family, Archie Felder, John Felder, and Bard Stevenson. The family will receive friends at DUKES-HARLEY FUNERAL HOME from 6 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2007.
