Larry approached me in the halls of Topeka High School in 1956, our mutual senior year. "I believe we are related. We should get together sometime and talk," is what he suggested. My own mother had mentioned the Middaugh name occasionally, but this was in reference to history that predated my own, so I didn't respond. This is my unfortunate mistake, because Larry could have 'filled in the blanks' and made unnecessary much of the later research I fruitlessly pursued. May he rest in peace.

Dear Susan and Family, My heartfelt condolences to you and yours. I will always have fond memories of Larry in his IOP basement lab where he helped so many of us get started and progress in our research. We missed him when he retired and hope his running spirit will continue to inspire others on Sullivan's Island.

Susan, my condolences to you and your family. Larry was a man of integrity, in his academic career and in his support of the environment. Sullivan's Island has lost a powerful force for the protection of its natural resources, especially the maritime forest.
