Lawrence Lee Obituary

Lawrence Borden "Larry" Lee SAVANNAH, GA - Lawrence Borden "Larry" Lee, 71, died suddenly at his home Thursday, June 4, 2015. Born in Huntsville, Alabama February 28, 1944, Larry grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina and attended the Gaud School for Boys. He graduated from the High School of Charleston and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Juris Doctor in 1971, from the University of South Carolina. Larry spent most of his adult life in Georgia practicing civil and criminal law. He retired from the U.S. Attorney's Office after thirty five years of service in the Federal Government. An aficionado of bluegrass music, Larry was one of the founders of WRFG Radio Free Georgia in Atlanta where he hosted and directed a bluegrass radio program for many years. Larry played the banjo and, as a bluegrass DJ, interviewed several legends of the genre including Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. While his son was growing up, he was a proud troop leader of the Cub Scouts in Atlanta and for years after, coached youth soccer in both Atlanta and Savannah. He was the consummate handyman who taught his two daughters to always check their oil and that anything could be fixed with duct tape and a coat hanger. Larry could frequently be found tooling about the Historic District in "Woody," his lovingly restored Volkswagen Beetle. He enjoyed good and vigorous debate and was a frequent writer of letters to the editor of this paper. He had a penchant for peacoats and was an excellent amateur photographer. He particularly loved taking pictures of his grandchildren and the local wetlands and waterways he and his wife Kristin visited on sailing adventures. Larry was a big fan of college baseball, basketball, and football and was known to remark that his Gamecocks were "just lucky to be on the same field as those guys." A member of St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church, Larry served as sub-Deacon, Senior Warden, a member of the Church Choir and the Men's Club. He was the Financial Director of the Thomas Park Food Pantry, past president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, past chairman of the Board of the Savannah Homeless Authority and a member of the Rumpsteak Men's Club and the Yeats Society. An avid sailing enthusiast, Larry was a member of the Geechee Sailing Club. Some of his happiest times were spent with family and friends aboard his boat, the Annabel Lee. Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Kristin Tolvstad Lee; son, L. Borden Lee Jr. (Keith Frick) of Orange, VA; daughters, Shannon E. R. Lee (Jonathan Goldstein) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Ramsay H. Jarvis (Spencer) of Senoia, GA; brother, James R. Lee of Charleston, SC; and two precious grandchildren, J. Spencer Jarvis IV and Amelia Borden Frick Lee. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Borden Wallace Lee and father, E. Lawrence Lee. A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The Requiem Mass will be 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 8, 2015, at St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the Mass. Remembrances may be made to the Thomas Park Food Pantry, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn St., Savannah, GA 31401. Borden: your father was such a devout and godly man. I remember hearing of death while I was on sabbatical in Spain walking the "Camino." There was such a time difference, but I was so glad you were able to receive my call. Your father was so very proud of you & what you had accomplished. Although the painful rawness may have diminished, I imagine his loss in your life remains a gaping hole. Please know he is still loved and missed by so many.
Faithfully yours, Pastor Lin+

Larry honored this country in his life and in his work. He would be proud on this day, and I am sorry he is not with us all on a beautiful Friday in the country he worked for in the interest of justice for all.

Remembering your father with gratefulness for his faith & service. I will always remember that I was hiking the Camino in Spain when I learned of his death. How glad I was to offer a prayer for him in Santiago.

Larry and I had a lot of fun digging into SCAD stuff early on, and conspired with Ester Shaver whom Larry called G2 (British Intelligence). He was a rare treasure for this community and I loved his sense of humor...about really yucky stuff!

I still miss Larry but I know he's in a better place because there is no worse place than where we are right now.

I hope I'm not offending anyone.

Sincerely,

I met Lawrence at Savannah Yeats Society dinners. We sat together on occasion and an immediate fondness ensued. He was a smart, decent, cordial human being. One instantly takes to others - or does not - according to any number of factors; among those factors for me is the instinctive measure of humaneness. One comment above has it that "Larry... was a good man." I would second that even though I only knew him briefly - too briefly. I found myself drawn to him with respect and gratefulness that he lived in my community. He was forthrightly ethical and had great politics. His death has come as a shock to me. I think the words I would use to describe him would be discernible kindness. From what little I know of his professional life I would also add courage. He was a rare human being whose loss is personal. Warmest condolences to his family.

Larry was a mentor and a friend for over twenty years. He will be sadly missed by so many! It was a privilege and a joy working side by side with him on the DNA Board for over eight years. He was a man you could count on to bring humor to any situation and one who could help bring peace where discord dwelt. His contributions towards the betterment of mankind are too numerous to list but we count ourselves among the multitude of his many friends who felt blessed to have known him! Larry Lee will be missed by us all! I so regret we were out of town and could not be here to pay our respect to this great man.

I met and became friends with Larry over 40 years ago when we were working to try and get WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) on the air, a manifestly uncertain proposition. His commitment to community activism was exceeded only by his generosity and wicked sharp sense of humor. Larry was one of the good guys and his passing renders the world a less graceful and interesting place. I miss him.

So very sorry for your loss. Larry was a wonderful person and was one of "my" attorneys at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Savannah. He was simply a dream to work with and he had my upmost respect and admiration. His stories of his early bluegrass radio career were always so interesting and filled with humor. He was not only a co-worker but was considered a friend by all. He will be missed on this earth by everyone that knew him. I pray that the Lord will comfort you during this time of grief, even through we are mourning his passing . . . the Angels are rejoicing as they welcome him home.

I have often heard that only the good die young. Apparently this is true, as Larry left at an obscenely young age, for those of us tacking into old age. The Larry I knew and respected was good as gold, kind as could be, and the thought that this fine human being in no longer with us is beyond belief. Larry, go now in peace and may the spirit of love surround you, everywhere you may go. (Unitarian)

Kris, I can't begin to tell you how sorry I was to learn of Larry's passing. It was easy to tell from the few times I spent with the two of you that he was a great guy. I will keep both he and you in my prayers. Remember John 14:27 (Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.).

What a privilege to have known him, even for a short time. He was easy to be around, since he seemed to have no ego. There are many things mentioned in his obituary which he could have bragged about, but never did. Condolences to the family on your loss.
