Lawrence Grooms Obituary

Lawrence Grooms Bonneau Beach, SC - Lawrence R. Grooms, 81, of Bonneau Beach, SC, passed from this life on Saturday morning, September 24, 2022, at the Summerville Community Hospice House. His funeral will be 11:00 AM Wednesday morning, September 28, 2022, at the First Baptist Church of St. Stephen. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Tuesday. Mr. Grooms was born May 12, 1941, in Sumter, SC, the son of Roy Lawrence Grooms and Dema Strickland Grooms. He was a resident of Bonneau Beach but spent majority of his life in St. Stephen where he graduated high school, married, raised a family, and operated a family business. He was a star high school athlete who developed a life-long love of sports and the outdoors. He coached little league, caught lots of Rockfish, coached JV football, caught more Rockfish, watched ESPN, and became his grandkids greatest fan. He always cheered for his Clemson Tigers - Go Tigers! He was a businessman who worked incredibly hard and extraordinarily long days building a company that provided for his family. As the owner of Grooms Oil Company, he did it all: drove the Texaco fuel truck, kept the books, and was a one man "fix it" department for a host of equipment that always begged for attention. He lived a colorful life filled with adventure, love, and laughter. Mr. Grooms built an ultralight airplane, taught himself to fly, and once landed it on the USS Yorktown in the Charleston Harbor. He remains one of the last three people to land and take off from the deck of the aircraft carrier. He rode a jet ski from the Gervais Street Bridge to Fort Sumter. He climbed to the top of Space Needle in Seattle and to the top of the Dome in our State's Capitol. He caught wild salmon in Alaska and all manner of fish in Lakes Moultrie and Marion. Mr. Grooms was a US Army Veteran who served a tour of duty in Korea, and he was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Stephen. He loved to be around people and could often be found in Wal-Mart, the St. Stephen IGA, and in other places telling stories about his family to anyone who might listen. He never had a short trip to the store! Family was everything to him. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you hold your loved ones a little closer and a little longer today. He was the proud father of his children, Lawrence "Larry" Grooms and his wife, Carol, of Bonneau Beach, Patti Grooms of Irmo and Bonneau Beach, and Wade Grooms of Bonneau Beach. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Taylor Grooms, Hayden Grooms, Jack Grooms, and Morgan Bridges. Mr. Grooms was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Patsy Taylor Grooms.
