Lawrence Green Obituary

Lawrence Albert "Buddy" Green MEGGETT, SC - On Sunday February 5, 2023, Lawrence Albert "Buddy" Green cast off the lines that moored his body to this earth and slowly, peacefully slipped out on his final voyage to God's ocean of mercy and love. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Friday, February 10, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 4255 Hwy. 165, Yonges Island. The Rite of Committal, with Navy Honors, will be held at 2:00 that afternoon at the Beaufort National Cemetery, where Buddy will be laid to rest in the historic section of the cemetery near many of his comrades from WWII. The family will receive friends between 4:00 and 7:00 PM Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. Buddy was born in Long Beach, California, February 3, 1928. He experienced the joys and adventures of Navy family life with mother, Sophia, and father, Jasper Eli; his sister, Janise (deceased) and younger brother, Henry (deceased) in Hawaii and St. Elmo, Alabama. WWII changed everything. His father, Lt. Green, overseas, Buddy Joined the Merchant Marine at 16, then the US Navy at 17. He "enjoyed" an educational 20-year career in salvage diving, the Korean War, China Patrol, diesel subs and even a short stay in the brig. He was on the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, for the signing of the WWII Peace Treaty in Tokyo Harbor - he was 17. He retired at age 37. After retirement, he became a bright star in the food and beverage business as the owner/operator and Master of the Buddy Burger at Osceola, Osceola Two and Homeport Pub with wife, CRNA transplant, Irene Vaughn Green, as master dishwasher. He is survived by his wife, Irene Vaughn Green; children, Jodi Creel (Gilbert), Lawrence Albert Green, Jr. (Teresa), Jami Williams (Dale), Margaret Motte (David) and their mother, Jacqueline Walker. And he is sorely missed by the "most beautiful LBD...Miss Kelly". He is also survived by his loving, Yankee branch of our family, who readily visit when cold weather threatens New England, or shrimp and crab are seen in the creek. Love was born anew with the blending of these two amazing families, united in admiration and appreciation for our Buddy Green. Mary and Bob, Suzanne, Paul and Fr. Richard come frequently to renew those bonds of family and friendship. They are on "speed dial" for transport from the airport to Meggett - our little slice of heaven. There are 11 grandchildren and now seven great-grands, blessed by God to call Lawrence A. Green 'Chief Patriarch' and our wonderful, truly American man . . . our Buddy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc. (843) 766-1365. When my best friend (BFF) Irene Vaughn told me she was considering transitioning from the absolute joys of spinsterhood to the questionable bliss of marriage, I knew I had to move quickly, as we had always promised that we would never allow each other to succumb to dizzy infatuation that led to that total commitment forever and ever, after which you cannot say "oops, never mind"
After meeting Buddy Green and seeing them together, I had to step back and finally agree that he was the One she had been holding out for.
Not only a handsome devil, but Mr. personality plus with a sense of humor that never quit.
(although as a southerner he didn't always know why he was so funny) Buddy was just Buddy,....
As he was a great entertainer and chef, lucky Irene never had to cook, although she did an amazing shrimp scampi, as I Think I recall.
So many wonderful visits/years later, one of the happiest marriages ever.
God blessed both of them.

I am so saddened to learn of Buddy's passing. He was an incredible man and I feel honored to have known him and lucky enough to have enjoyed his company. I will certainly miss his sense of humor, incredible cooking, and, of course, his colorful stories. To me, Buddy is a true American Hero and treasure not to be forgotten but instead, held in the highest regard possible. This man has left an indelible mark on my life and I will always smile when I think of him. I can almost hear him saying with a sheepish grin, "Ain't that some s**t!"
