Laurinda Schenck Obituary

Laurinda Schenck FLAT ROCK, NC - Mrs. Alexander Fairchild Schenck, Laurinda Carlson Schenck, died peacefully at the age of 90 on a sunny fall afternoon, Saturday, November 12, 2011 at her home in Flat Rock, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Schenck. Laurie was the daughter of the late Laurinda Richardson Carlson and Carl Ismael Carlson of Greensboro, N.C. Laurie attended Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut and Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Following Hollins Laurie was one of the first graduates of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women, now part of Cornell University. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Historic Flat Rock Association, The Colonial Dames of North Carolina, Yeaman's Hall Club in Charleston, S.C., and the Junior League of Charlotte, North Carolina. Laurie and Alex had a lifelong commitment to preservation, conservation, and philanthropy. Laurie led a happy, positive, and useful life. She always thought about others more than herself. As her nephew said, "Laurie's cup was not only half full, but someone was coming around the corner to fill it up the rest of the way." Her family includes her brother, Carl I. Carlson, Jr. and his wife Anne of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, Weldon Schenck and his wife, Kathy, of Charleston, S.C.; Sandy Schenck and his wife, Missy, of Flat Rock, N.C.; nine wonderful grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at St. John's in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock, N.C. with Rev. John A. Morton officiating.
