Laura Lynn Campbell Hughes WALTERBORO - Mrs. Laura Lynn Campbell Hughes died peacefully at her home in the care of her immediate family and special caregiver and friend on the morning of October 29, 2013. Her memorial service will be held at 4 o'clock on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Walterboro, SC. The family will receive friends following the service in Douglas Hall at the church where she has been an active member. Interment will be held at a later date and will be private. Mrs. Hughes was born on October 5, 1938 in Walterboro, the fourth child of Edward Palmer Campbell, Sr. and Laura Whilden Hill Campbell. She was married to Jackson Hughes of Walterboro. Her first love was her family, her husband of 50 years, their daughter Camalla Hughes Hiers and husband Thurston, and their daughters Lauren Hughes and Ansley Jackson. There are two step children, Paula Hughes Hewitt of Summerville and Timothy Hughes of Walterboro. Siblings of Mrs. Hughes are Dorothy Campbell Haws (George) and Edward Palmer Campbell (Jo Niblack) of Tampa, FL. She was predeceased by an older sister, Gladys Campbell Jensen of Sacramento, CA. Her special caregiver and friend from high school is Whimpie Thacker Jefferson of Wilson, NC. There is a close knit family of cousins. Laura Lynn attended the Walterboro public schools and the College of Charleston. She was a graduate from Newberry College. She gave back to her community with a teaching career which spanned 30 years. In 1971, she originated a class in Local Heritage at Walterboro High School. In 1977, the South Carolina Education Association recognized this semester class of local history, folklore, and architecture as the first of its kind in the state. In March of 1986, she was honored by the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution as Outstanding American History Teacher of South Carolina, as a result of a survey by the Colonel Joseph Glaner, Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution. She was an active member of the Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. In 1994, Mrs. Hughes chaired a committee which published as pictorial history of Colleton County. The volume is a book of priceless photographs, heir looms, and historical information that is a priceless reference for posterity. As past president and historian/curator of the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society, Mrs. Hughes embodied local history. In 2013, she became the sixth recipient of the Distinguished Colletonian Award. She was the founding chairperson of the Preservation Awards and Hanging of the Greens at the Little Library; has been the speaker for many historical events in the county and has prepared the scripts for narration of local towns sponsored by the Historical and Preservation Society. She leaves behind a treasure trove of written history of Colleton County and environs. Her love of gardening was another activity for this lady. She was a long time member of the Mayfield Garden Club and past president. Combining history and gardening, she actively measured 50 Live Oak Trees in the vicinity. In 2006, Mrs. Hughes co-authored with cousins, a family history - Members of the Whilden-Hill Clan: The Functional Southern Family. Only a limited number were published for the family and there is a copyright, but it can be located in the county archives. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, Walterboro or the Colleton County Historical & Preservation Society.
