Larry Westbury Obituary

Larry D. Westbury St. George, SC - Larry D. Westbury, husband of Catherine Byrd Westbury, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Roper Hospital. Funeral Services will be held 2 P.M. Sunday December 16, 2018 St. George United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Theron Smith officiating and assisted by Phil Byrd. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Elliot Mauney, Westbury Mauney, Scott Garris, Joey Dantzler, Keith Riley, and Will Garris. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Young Christian Workers Sunday School Class. Visitation will be 3 to 6 P.M. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George. Larry was born November 7, 1932 in Grover a son of the late VonLehe Kistler Westbury and Annie Vera Westbury. He was predeceased by siblings, Clement Earl Westbury, James Kistler Westbury, Lee Wendell Westbury and Virginia Riley Smith. He was a 1950 graduate of St. George High school where he was an outstanding athlete in all sports. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Banking of The South. He retired in 1998 as CEO and President of First National Bank of Orangeburg. He started his career in banking as a teller for St. George branch of the Farmers and Merchant Bank of Walterboro and was instrumental in starting The First National Bank of St. George where he served as President. It later merged with The First National Bank of Orangeburg. He is credited with helping to build one of largest and financially sound banks in Carolina's. He received many accolades for excellence in banking. He was a past president of the SC Bankers Association. He was a member of the St. George United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher of Young Christian Workers Class, choir member, and he served on almost every board of the church. He loved the outdoors, playing golf, farming, fishing, and sharing his vegetables from his garden. He was a former trustee of Indian field Campground, a former councilman and mayor of Town of St. George. Surviving is his loving wife, Catherine Byrd Westbury; daughters, Cathy (Ed) Hill, Marlene (David) Banner and Luanne (Phil) Mauney, all of St. George; grandchildren; Amy Hill Ulmer, Niki (Scott) Garris, Laura (Joey) Dantzler, Elliot (Trish) Mauney, Westbury (Stefanie) Mauney and Kaitlin Mauney; great-grandchildren; Madison, Caleb and Walker Ulmer; Megan, Will and Camryn Garris; Emma and Brenner Dantzler; Sara Catherine Mauney and Ella Mauney; a special nephew, Keith Riley and a number of nieces and nephews.
