Larry McClellan Taylor, son of Mildred Goodwin Taylor and the late Clyde Otis Taylor passed away on Friday, January 5, 2007. Larry was a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School in 1962 and graduated from Newberry College in 1969. Upon graduation from Newberry College he began a career in the insurance industry with Palmetto State Life Insurance Company. While with PSL he achieved the distinction of being named A LOMA FELLOW. This award recognized professional achievement and proficiency in all areas of life insurance company operation within the life insurance industry. While at PSL, Larry was involved in helping to found a federally chartered employee credit union. He served in various capacities including treasurer and president. In 1976 Larry opened a retail tire and automotive business, Sav-Mor Tire in West Columbia. He successfully operated the business for ten years at which time he sold it in 1986. In 1986 Larry embarked on a new career in aquaculture development. He purchased land and constructed ponds and raceways for fish production which he operated up until shortly before his passing. As a charter member of the South Carolina Aquaculture Association, he was extensively involved in encouraging the development and growth of the aquaculture industry. In 2003 while serving as president of the SCAA, Larry helped guide and forge the passage of the 2003 Aquaculture Enabling Act signed by Governor Mark Sanford. This legislation effectively opened the door to widespread growth for aquaculture in South Carolina in our immediate future. Larry has remained totally dedicated to promoting the growth of aquaculture in South Carolina. Larry and his wife of 42 years, Marie have been active shaggers for over 30 years. They have developed a great number of special shagging friends throughout the southeast. As a member of the Columbia Shag Club, Larry was involved with the leaders of other Shag clubs through out the southeast in the Carolinas Associations of Shag Clubs. In 1989 the Association of Shag Clubs undertook the purchase of SOS, the Society of Stranders. This is an organization made up of thousands of people who enjoy the camaraderie, the music, and the shag dance. Larry was elected chairman of the SOS board in 1989 and served until 1992. In 1993, Larry and his wife Marie were inducted into the Central South Carolina Shaggers Wall of Fame. In 1997 The Association of Shag Clubs along with the SOS board awarded Larry the Shagging Icon for making outstanding and continuing contributions to the shag, the SOS, and the Association of Carolinas Shag Clubs. For the last eighteen years Larry has been an active member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church of West Columbia. He served in many capacities, Sunday school teacher, member of various committees, church council, and congregational treasurer. Surviving in addition to his wife, Marie Heins Taylor of Gaston and his mother Mildred Goodwin Taylor of Cayce; are his daughters and sons-in-law, Allison Taylor Bamji, husband Zubin Bamji and their daughter Ava Taylor Bamji of Silver Spring, MD, Micki Taylor Stephenson and husband Chris of North Myrtle Beach, Kerry Mencken Taylor of Gaston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrna Taylor Stokes and husband Troy of Moore, Tanya Taylor Goff and husband John of Hilton Head, Amelia Taylor Schafer and husband Jim of Gaston; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Taylor of Cayce; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Randall Taylor and his wife Ellen of Edisto Beach, Clyde Otis Taylor, Jr. and his wife Ann of Newberry; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Marie and family,
Larry was one of my favorite people in the shag community. He had a way of making people feel comfortable on the dance floor, whether they could dance or not! When not dancing, he was a caring friend who was genuinely interested in people's lives. He will be greatly missed!
May God grant you all the comfort and peace that only He can bring.

Marie, May God bless and guide you through this difficult time. Larry was one of my SOS favorites--such a very special man. No matter how bad he may have been feeling during his illness, he seemed to never reflect it--he always appeared pleasant and brought cheer and smiles to the rest of us. Larry will truly be missed! With deepest regards....

A true legend has passed on to a better place, but his legacy will be seen as his great contribution to the Carolinas Shag Asscoiation, to SOS as one of the first leaders, to admirers of his "old time" shag style(the Larry Taylor wannabees, like myself), but more importantly to his love and care and concern for the well being of Marie and the girls. Larry, rest in peace, and Marie, you have many, many caring friends all around who will always be there for you. Count Mary and I as two of those. With our love and sympathy, T.K. and Mary
