Kevin O'Shea Obituary

Kevin Michael O'Shea MT. PLEASANT - Kevin Michael O'Shea died peacefully on Saturday October 7, 2023. Kevin was born in Pittsburgh on February 14, 1973. When he was 8 years old, his parents decided to relocate to Charleston, SC to start a business and afford Kevin and his sister, Shannon, the opportunity to grow up in a beautiful city on the ocean. That was the beginning of Kevin's love of the Lowcountry. Kevin was truly a son of the rivers and creeks, where fishing and surfing were his passion. He surfed at Folly Beach, IOP and even in Costa Rica. He fished at Bulls Bay and brought home many "reds" and trout. Some of his fondest memories were playing basketball. As a kid, he spent countless hours in his driveway shooting hoops. He had the biggest trophy for a win with his 8th grade team playing for Christ Our King/Stella Maris school. Many a Sunday was spent at the Bishop England gym. His hero was Larry Bird and the Celtics. Of course, being originally from Pittsburgh, and surrounded by his sports loving family, he followed the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers with a passion. Kevin graduated from Darlington School in Rome, GA. then went on to the University of Mississippi. He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor's degree in education. He loved Oxford, his Ole Miss Rebels and "The Grove". Hotty Toddy!!! Kevin's first job out of college was teaching third grade in Memphis, TN. He did that for one year. Although he loved "his kids", he decided this was not his calling and he returned home to Charleston. Kevin was a tall guy blessed with good looks and engaging personality. He had a natural talent for sales and the Irish gift of Blarney. His love of music knew no bounds; all types. Some of his favorite artists were Jason Isbell, Johnny Cash, John Prine, Tedeschi Trucks Band ... and the list goes on. Throughout his life, Kevin battled drug addiction. This disease robbed him physically, emotionally and spiritually. In spite of this, he never stopped trying to overcome and move forward. He never dwelled on his own misgivings. At the time of his death, he was seeking help from Charleston Recovery Center. His wish was to help others. Kevin's generosity and friendships were endless. However his personal journey was a tough one. His parents want everyone to know he was a good son and they loved him every day of his life. They urge everyone to demand better treatment for people suffering this way. Kevin is survived by his parents, Bill and Joanne O'Shea; sister, Shannon Tant (Edward); niece, Mary Grace Nofsinger; nephew, Andrew Sullivan Nofsinger; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of Kevin's life will be held Nov. 21 at 3:00. Mt. Pleasant Waterfront park. Cooper River Room. Family and friends are invited to attend. No suits or ties!! Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel. If you wish, please consider a contribution to: Wake Up Carolina, 217 Lucas St. Suite G, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or Dorchester Paws, 136 4 Paws Ln. I've been searching for the words the past few days...and still don't think I've found them.

I'm so deeply saddened and been in a sort of malaise since hearing the news.
I first met Kevin in 1989 at boarding school, i always admired Kevin and feel he had a fundamental impact on me in those formative years that carried through to this day.
We became great friends over those two years and as happens to most, we lost touch after school for the most part as we went on to college and threw ourselves into the world.
I always took comfort knowing He was out in the world doing his thing as I did mine and thought of him often.
He did come down to visit once during the mid 90s though he didn't remember..ha.

It wasn't til maybe 7 or 8 years ago that we reconnected, and I am so grateful for that. He was working in my city for a week so we got to hang out every night, it was like we just picked up where left off.
We then kept in close touch and would have hours long phone calls just talking about everything, laughing, sharing etc...
Last time I saw Kevin was at my house as we chilled and watched Rodney Dangerfields "Easy Money"...classic stuff.
I was happy when he was so excited about my work and my art and that he then admired me and what I was doing, even wanting to get involved in some capacity.
I truly thought we would see eachother and hang out and have good times every few years or so til deep into our old age and am so heartbroken that life had other plans..
He was one of a kind and I will miss him dearly.
My heart goes out to his family and freinds.
Love you Kev!

He was just a pleasant person to be around. Always kind and went about his own business. I was one of the assistant coaches for the basketball and also served as the business instructor. He was a great basketball player for us.

Had the pleasure to play basketball part of a year with Kevin. I witnessed him step up his game throughout the season and make even bigger strides the following year. Kevin was easy going and enjoyed time with all that got to know him. My condolences to his living family. RIP my MVA teammate.
