Kathryn Gaillard Obituary

Kathryn M. Gaillard CHARLESTON - Surrounded by her loving family, Kathryn Shirley Moore Gaillard, 94, passed away peacefully in Charleston, SC on December 29, 2021. Kathryn was born in Charlotte, NC to Charles and Dora (Helms) Moore on August 13, 1927. She was predeceased by her brothers, Charles, Joe andPaul Moore, and the love of her life and devoted husband, Philip Porcher Gaillard, Jr. She is survived by her son, Philip Gaillard (Amelia), daughters, Mary Dora "Tootie" Barfield, and Adele (Gaillard) Hendricks (Christopher); grandchildren: Joel Gaillard (Shelly), Hannah (Gaillard) Weiss (Brian), Rachel (Gaillard) Bovee (David), Michael Barfield, Angela (Hendricks) Grimes (Tristan), Michelle Hendricks and David Hendricks; great-grandchildren: Vella Gaillard, Lenny and Jules Weiss, Levi and Micah Bovee, Carter and Chloe Barfield, Anabelle and Ella Grimes. Kathryn graduated from Winthrop College with a BA in Journalism. She enjoyed working in radio and newspaper while living in both Sumter and her beloved adopted home of Charleston. Kathryn then sold real estate for years before opening her own brokerage, Gaillard Realty. She went on to pursue a career as an archivist at the Charleston Museum. She enjoyed exploring "every nook and cranny" of Charleston during her time there before her retirement. Of all the many accomplishments that could be listed, Kathryn's favorite and most impacting was being a loving, gracious wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother & great-grandmother. Her strong and unwavering faith in Jesus was expressed most clearly in her unconditional love and servant's heart. People of all ages were drawn to the warmth and safety of her friendship. Her door and her heart were always open. Her family described her as fun, optimistic, joyful, welcoming, resilient, accepting, vibrant, adventurous, generous, kind, gracious and full of wonder. Kathryn had an uplifting effect on everyone she knew. One of her son's lifelong friends said, "She was a wonderful woman, the mother to the neighborhood, including me." She was universally loved and admired. A memorial to Kathryn's life will be held at her church, Ashley River Baptist, at 1101 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC 29407 on Saturday, January 15 at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to her favorite institution, the Charleston Museum. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

What an amazing woman Mrs. Gaillard was. She was strong and smart and kind. And as my mother has always said, "A true Southern lady."

"Ms G" was like a second mother to me. I can´t even count how many nights I spent at their house singing at the piano with Adele, baking cookies in the middle of the night, sharing stories at the dining room table where she served the most amazing meals. I will truly miss her, and I will always be inspired by her faith and her positive outlook. The photo shows her learning to play lacrosse at some point in her late 80s - she was always up for learning something new!!

My Dad (Joe) with his sister "Kate" at my wedding in 2007 in Rochester NY. So thankful to have her there along with Della. Such a wonderful spirit & caring soul.
