“King Karl” as he signed his name on the walls of Charleston High, is one of my most memorable characters. Hit one from the corner in the Branchville gym against Blackville to seal the conference championship. Never met a shot he didn’t like. Ate 13 hamburgers at my house once. The whole Mathis family will always be part of me. I am so sorry

Carl, was the most kindest cousin any family could ever want. We were born the same year 6 months apart. The family will deeply miss his participations at family reunions, and home coming celebrations . He always came to his sister, brothers, nieces, and nephews functions and parties. Carl had a generous and kind character about him that was felt every time you talk him. Carl was a rare genius with a loving heart. Sincere sympathy from Darnell.

God's peace and comfort to the Mathis family. I was blessed to be a friend of Karl growing up on Smith St. as we played street and organized sports together at Charleston High. He was a great competitor with a very humble personality. May God be pleased with him and may the rewards he deserves but did not get pass on to his family. Peace unto you all.
