Karen Jacques Obituary

Karen "Kerry" Jacques CHARLESTON - Karen "Kerry" Jacques entered into eternal life with our Lord on April 5, 2011, following a prolonged battle with breast cancer. Kerry, daughter of Karl M. Klein and Lois R. Crasto, was born on June 18, 1946, in New Orleans, LA, and lived life with vitality, southern charm, and graciousness, worthy of a Naw'lins native embracing her hometown's motto "Laissez les bon temps rouler!" Kerry spent much of life on stage, whether as a young model, a maiden in a Mardi Gras ball, a Bachelors degree recipient at Louisiana State University, an educator, or as entertainer to family and friends with her sense of humor and story-telling. Kerry's marriage to Bertrand C. Jacques in March 1971 began a journey from New Orleans to many states and countries which fueled her love to travel that ultimately in 1982 brought her to Charleston, her home for the last 29 years. In addition to being a supportive Army wife, she was the ultimate role model for her two daughters setting a true example of spirituality, work ethic, community involvement, and, most of all, compassion for everyone she met. Kerry touched many lives as a Minister of Holy Communion at Blessed Sacrament Church, and St. Francis and MUSC hospitals. Kerry's commitment to her faith was absolute. Her success as a real estate professional began in 1986 and encompassed virtually every aspect of the profession from broker to owner to educator. Her leadership roles included serving as a Director for the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors, the South Carolina Association of Realtors, and the Realtors Education Foundation. As an accomplished instructor at the local and state levels, Kerry's blend of subject matter expertise and humor made her a student favorite. Her passion for the business was contagious both in and out of the classroom. For her many professional contributions, she was honored by her peers as the 2001 Realtor of the Year. Kerry's association with the Historic Charleston Foundation for almost 25 years showcased her many talents including floral design and docent tours that brought historical homes to life. Her love for flowers naturally led to her Charleston Garden Club membership. Kerry's love for people and her town fueled a desire to give back countless volunteer hours to many organizations such as the Gibbes Museum, Habitat for Humanity, Crisis Ministries, Hospice of Charleston, Spoleto, Cancer Survivor Network, and Race for the Cure. As a true friend and "sister," Kerry will be remembered most for her joie d'vivre, compassion for others, and her ability to make people feel good about themselves. A gracious hostess and consummate cook, Kerry loved to entertain others with delicious home-cooked meals, beautiful flower arrangements, artistic table settings, holiday decorations, and funny jokes. She leaves a legacy of love and laughter, kindness and caring, and just a hint of mischief. Kerry is survived by her husband, Bert, daughters, Juliette J. Brinkley and Jeanne "Lolli" Haugh, and their husbands, five grandsons, Edwin, Bill, Thomas, Avery and Caleb who lovingly knew her as "Mere," her brother, Karl M. Klein and his loving wife, Dorothy. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 11, 2011, at 10 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Church, 5 Saint Teresa Drive, Charleston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Lowcountry Chapter of Susan G. Komen or the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research. Kerry, You were a very special friend to me. From the moment we met in 1971 in Munich through all the years, we had a bond of friendship that weathered the times. I miss your cheerful "RIBBITT", your catching smile and intellect. Good bye my dear friend until we meet again. Love, Aunt Toad
