Karel Kennedy SUMTER, SC - We regret to announce the passing of Dr. Karel Kennedy. Dr. Kennedy will be missed and his passing mourned by family, friends and patients. Dr. Kennedy lived a private life, though his accomplishments were vast. He expressed a strong desire to have his life celebrated in a private way. Consequently, the family will have a private memorial ceremony. Please know that all acts of kindness, expressions of sympathy and especially prayers are sincerely appreciated. Karel was a beloved brother, uncle, physician and lifelong student of science and medicine who died peacefully August 5, 2016 at Palmetto Health Tuomey in Sumter, SC. He was born May 6, 1946 in Greeleyville, SC to Ben and Susie Kennedy. Dr. Kennedy is a 1963 graduate of C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville, SC and received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He completed medical school at Howard University College of Medicine and served his internship at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY and did Residency at Harlem Hospital, New York,NY. Dr. Kennedy was Board Certified in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He was a kind and compassionate person and physician who dedicated his professional life to patient care. Karel was generous to a fault. While at Howard University, he was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Chapter life member. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Susie Kennedy and brother, former Representative Kenneth "Ken" Kennedy. Survived by his siblings, Louise (Glenn) Payne, Castina Kennedy, Ernestine (Lincoln) King, Glen (Cynthia) Kennedy, Deon (Valerie) Kennedy; sister-in-law, Doris Kennedy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
