Julie Ann Trouche Obituary

Julie Ann Trouche CHARLESTON - Julie Ann Carr Trouche, 84, widow of Paul Edwin Trouche, died peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2013, with her children at her bedside. She is survived by her four sons, John Paul Trouche (Janie), Perry Edwin Trouche (Alice), Michael Francis Trouche, and Thomas Gerard Trouche (Ariel), and her two daughters, Mary Helen Trouche Dantzler (Lynn) and Therese Trouche Smythe (George), as well as fifteen grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy Joseph Trouche and her daughter, Mary Aleda Trouche. Julie Ann cherished her family and her faith, the inspiration for an energetic life as a mother, teacher and friend. She was born on Yonges Island on November 6, 1928, the daughter of Samuel Perry Carr and Marguerite O'Connor Carr. Julie Ann was a gifted student at St. Paul's High School and at the age of sixteen was offered a full academic scholarship to Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. She graduated in 1949 with high honors in Biology. After returning to Charleston with plans to attend the Medical College of South Carolina, Julie Ann married Eddie Trouche on February 4, 1950, and chose family over a promising career in medicine. As an only child whose father died when she was a teenager, Julie Ann dedicated herself to her large, loving family. Togetherness as family was her guiding principle for meals, prayers, church, vacations and social events. Julie Ann went back to school in later life, earning a Master's Degree from the Citadel and began teaching at Ashley Hall. Countless Ashley Hall alumnae will remember her fondly from their days in her English and South Carolina History classes, as well as from her years directing the annual Christmas play. Julie Ann was a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass and served the Church in many capacities. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a lay reader, and she taught Sunday school and adult bible study. Many Charlestonians may remember the sight of Julie Ann walking with her children to church every morning before school. She had an avid interest in history and literature, was a licensed tour guide and a member of the book committee of the Charleston Library Society. Julie Ann was also active in the Marians, the Theresians, the Century Club, the Laura Bragg Society, the Garden Club of Charleston, the Charleston Bible Society and her all-time favorite, the Second Wednesday Book Club. The relatives and friends of Julie Ann C. Trouche are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan's Island. The Rite of Committal, at St. Lawrence Cemetery, will be Private. Friends may call on Wednesday evening between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Smythe, 20 New Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy PO Box 21833 Charleston, SC 29413 or Stella Maris Catholic Church PO Box 280 Sullivan's Island, SC 29482 or Mepkin Abbey 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd. Dear TT,
My heart goes out to you and your family. You know that the Class of 78 adored, just adored your mother. I'll never forget her enthusiasm for the English language and South Carolina history, her wicked sense of humor, her perfect blend of high expectations for her students and yet sincere appreciation of their gifts. I will miss her greatly but what she gave me in 10th grade English will stay with me the rest of my life.

I have missed Julie Ann for several years. When she lived there, we walked the beach on Sulliva's Island almost every day. Julie Ann was always barefoot. She usually rode her bike. Once in a while she could not remember at which station it was parked and we had to search. One of my favorite stories was when someone in the family had to point out to her that her new bathing suit was on backwards. She laughed and said she thought the two parts extending in the back were ruffles. I am sure they were angel wings. Julie Ann will always have a special place in my heart.

She was like another mother. Many fun hours and days with Tim on Legare St with Eddie and Julie Ann watching over. When I barged in on Christmas dinner, she insisted I stay for dessert, so I came back the following year ... and the year after that. She is missed.

She could always make my Mom laugh out loud and never scolded me or Tim for trying to befuddle Father Murphy at St. Mary's - I loved her for that.

Julie Ann was one of my mentors. After she left book club, I lost interest. She was so bright and fun and I loved her. When my husband and I used to visit her on Sullivan's Island or downtown, she made our lives so much more interesting. We could discuss anything with her and come away feeling as if we had just learned something from a great teacher. We miss her so much.
