Judy McMahon Obituary

Judy McMahon Charleston - Judy L. McMahon, 76, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 1, 2021. Her Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston. Inurnment will be private. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. The family requests all in attendance to wear a mask and be vaccinated. Judy was born on March 30, 1945 in McKinney, Texas. She was the eldest daughter of a Texas beauty, Ruth Woolbright, and a dashing Italian American Air Force pilot, Michael Lentine. The Lentines resided in places near and far, including Sumter, SC and Japan. Judy graduated early from Winthrop University and received a full scholarship to pursue her Master's in East Asian Studies from Florida State University. She then went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Wells Cone, and taught High School for seven years in Columbia, SC. After the passing of Wells, Judy went on to pursue her dream of becoming a Family Court Judge by earning her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Following law school, Judy almost joined the Peace Corps, but instead, she came to Charleston to marry James (Jim) Bridges. Upon her arrival in Charleston, Judy was an assistant attorney for the City of Charleston and became a Municipal Court Judge. Judy realized her dream when she was elected Family Court Judge (with the help of many dear friends and colleagues). This was a position she would continue to enjoy for 33 years. Of special note, Judy was the first woman elected Judge to any court above the magistrate level in South Carolina. Additionally, she accomplished this feat while pregnant with her daughter Sarah. Judy was passionate about helping families and children through her work. She loved the people she worked with in Family Court and the South Carolina Bar. On Valentine's Day, 2005, Judy married her husband, Jerry. Judy loved her family and friends, a good party, dancing, cooking, delicious food and wine, art, gardening, her Book Club, living in downtown Charleston, the Hibernian Society, traveling, and arranging flowers for friends, family and Grace Church. Judy is survived by her husband Gerald (Jerry) McMahon, Jr., daughter, Sarah Bridges Hales (husband, Kevin), grandson, George James, and stepdaughter, Maire McMahon Davit (husband, Lou). Judy is also survived by sisters, Shirley Chandler, Carmel Clements, Karyn Powell; brothers, Michael and John Lentine; step-mother, Elaine Lentine; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and 2 Godchildren. Judy will be greatly missed and with us always. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc. (843)766-1365. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Judge McMahon was a trailblazer and mentor to so many. Everything she did, she did with Grace and humility and she made this world better as a result of it. Thank you Jerry, Sarah, and her family she loved so much, for unselfishly sharing her with us. I will miss her and always remember those tender teaching moments.

As a State Senator, I had the distinct pleasure to nominate and help elect Judy to be the first female statewide judge in South Carolina history. What an accomplishment! She made all of us proud to support her as a family court judge. More importantly, she was a wonderful person of integrity and compassion. Our prayers for her family's loss. We will remember her and mourn her passing.

How fortunate I feel to have recently reignited a friendship with Judy, sharing a small group in Joanne Ellison's community Bible study and taking many walks around Hampton Park while Dewey pursued his most recent advanced degree from the Citadel.
Judy greatly appreciated her life in downtown Charleston, especially the botanical beauty of all her surroundings, including Hampton Park. She created her own gorgeous backyard Charleston garden and supported the seasonal garden and home tours, often touring the same venue multiple times to share them with family and friends.
I was one of the lucky ones to have practiced law in her Courtroom. What a wonderful Judge she was, always thoughtfully listening to all sides with compassion and a strong sense of duty and service.
Judy and I shared a love of travel, especially to our mutual ancestral home of Sicily. Judy always felt fortunate to have such dear men in her life, Wells, Jim and Jerry. Jerry, our hearts ache for you!
Family was always so important to Judy. She spoke often of her sisters and brothers, but most often of her dear Sarah, of whom she is most proud. And how excited she was to see the birth of her precious Grandson, over whom she will be keeping watch.
Salute, good and faithful Servant!

Dear Jerry, Sarah, Marie and Woolbright and Lentine families: Judy was a courageous, caring judge with a kind demeanor and a warrior spirit. It was my great honor to serve her floor leader for her historic election as the first women to serve as a statewide judge in South Carolina. When I later joined her as a member of the South Carolina Judiciary with another first, we began many years of service together. She was "primes inter pares"-first among equals. Today, I salute my dear Sister in the Law. Requiescant in Pace. Jean Toal

Jerry and Family:
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of your dear wife, mother and sister.
I first met Judy in law school and had the pleasure of knowing her there-after in the legal world. She was an excellent attorney and, more importantly, always a very nice person. God bless Judy.....

I am so sadden to hear of the passing of Judy.I had the pleasure of attending high school with Judy at Edmunds High in Sumter. She was a couple of grades above me, but that was not an issue. Her brother, Mike was in my graduating class. We spent many mornings talking before school. I was thrilled and so happy for her
when I learned that she had been appointed Family Court Judge. She was so sweet and kind, I know she would be great as a Judge. Your family are in my prayers as you go forward without her. She will always be with you in your heart.❤❤❤
