The Spoleto Festival and the City of Charleston will not be the same without this special lady. She will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched with her ready laugh and her flair for life.

Judith Vane was a wonderful, special lady, in every sense of the word. She had a presence that lights up a room - all the Vanes have that quality. She will be sorely missed.

Judy was so proud of her acting talents and I will remember the host of memorable characters she brought to life on the stage of the Dock St. Theatre.

It is hard to imagine Charleston and Spoleto without Judy. She has been a supportive and nurturing presence in big and small ways, but mostly deeply personal ways. Judy was a generous and faithful friend, and always quick to welcome newcomers and include them in her wide circle. We will miss her intelligence, her wit, her sincerity, and her smile. We love you, Judy.

When we moved to Charleston, 23 years ago I said to my husband Graham that when I grew up I wanted to be Judy Vane. She was an amazing woman. She was always positive and fun and had her finger on the pulse of our town. She opened her home to us and invited us to Thanksgivings and parties. Her mid-Spoleto parties were legendary. I learned to drink lemon-drops and sang with the cast of 2 operas at one such party, and I don't sing. She shared phone messages from Anthony Hopkins and her rabbi with us. She was one of a kind. We will miss her very much. Spoleto will never be the same without her.

Mrs. Vane was a lady with style. Through her hospitality and genuine interest in others no one was a stranger, at least not for long. She attended Crafts School, Memminger High and USC with my mother, Mary McQueen, who fondly remembers Judy as the classmate she knew the longest, from grade school to university. Our thoughts are with Jay, Adam, Judy's extended family and their many friends. She leaves us all with many memories and a legacy of the arts for generations to come.
