Judith Solomon Obituary

Judith Mendell Solomon CHARLESTON - Beloved matriarch of the Solomon Family, Judith Mendell Solomon departed this life peacefully Friday, November 18, 2011. At the time of her passing, she was 86 years old. Judy was born in Philadelphia on August 2, 1925. As the loving wife of Melvin Solomon, Judy brought her charisma and unique style to Charleston in 1947. Her playful spirit was ever-present whether she was playing mahjong with her friends, teaching her grandchildren to read, or sharing her famous romantic stories of worldly travels. Her kindness, loyalty, confidence and compassion set an example for four generations of Charlestonians to follow in her footsteps. She leaves a legacy of philanthropy, devotion to her family and profound appreciation for the Arts. Judy was the first Lion of Judah of the Charleston Jewish Federation and a past president of Hadassah. Judy and Melvin were honored for their charitable support of education, Judaism and civic causes with numerous awards including the BSBI 2010 Humanitarian Award for the Arts, the 2002 AFP Lowcountry Philanthropy award and honored by institutions as diverse as the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Israel, the Orthodox Union in New York City, Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and the Cardinal Cushing School for Exceptional Children of All Faiths. She is survived by her children, Cheryl (& Edward) Dauber, Robin Solomon, Heidi (& Barry) Allen and Zachary (& Susan) Solomon; her grandchildren, Jeremy (& Miri) Dauber, Gabriel (& Elisa) Bluestein, Noah Dauber, Andrew (& Sara) Dauber, Jessica (& Eduardo) Lucena, Rebecca Leibowitz, Abigail (& Joseph) Pearson, Alexander, Benjamin, and Jonathan Solomon, Eddy Allen, and her six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the graveside in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue, at 3:30PM on Sunday, November 20, 2011. The family will be sitting Shiva on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. For further information, please call 843.720.8100. Dear Cheryl, Robin, Heidi, & Zach:
I am so sorry to hear of your dear mother's passing. Here in St. Joseph, MO, I do not get the Charleston paper, but woke up this morning (Thanksgiving) and, for no apparent reason, thought about your precious Mom. A check online told me the sad news. She will be missed by many and held dear in the hearts of all! Her life and legacy are among the things I am grateful for today. Dee Dee Geraty Squires

Dear Solomon Family,
I wish to my Ashley Hall Classmate and Friend, Heidi, from our Class of '71, my deepest sympathies in the passing of her loving mother. I remember so vividly as a boarder being taken into your home for recuperation from the flu and rescue the AH infirmary to eat baked apples at your mother's insistence. And they were so delicious and restored me to health! What a loving and generous family you have been to the Greater Charleston community over the years. We are all blessed by your parents and will miss your mother's charm and hospitality from our lives but will forever remember her fondly and with great thanksgiving and celebration of life. With warm regards and love, Nancy Muller

I met Mrs. Solomon in 1971 when I worked my first job at the Sam Solomon store downtown. We transferred to the North Charleston store shortly afterwards. Mr Solomon was the nicest man I have ever had the pleasure of working for. He cared very much about the people who worked for him. Mrs. Solomon was always so friendly when she came by. Always smiling , always made me feel like I was worth a million bucks. So lively, they were so in love. You could see it in their eyes. I also so Zachary many times around the office upstairs. It was wonderful there. I share in the loss of two wonderful people who have made the world a better place. They are once again together and this time it is forever. God Bless you all.
