Joyce Horres Obituary

Joyce Horres Varnville, SC - Mrs. Joyce Elise DeWitt Horres, 92, of Edgewood Road in Varnville, died February 6, 2022 peacefully in her home. Mrs. Horres was born January 16, 1930 in Hampton, a daughter of the late Charlie Eddie DeWitt and Corrie Sauls DeWitt. Her years as an Air Force wife allowed her to travel extensively and participate in many shared activities in Girl Scouting with her 3 daughters. She established a Day Care for Scouting while stationed in Warner Robins, GA and served as camp director for Camp Martha Johnson. She also was awarded the highest award in Scouting, The Thanks Badge. She returned to Hampton County in 1974 when her husband (Aubrey) retired. Joyce's Kake Korner was opened in Varnville, SC in 1977. She loved decorating cakes and catering for any occasion. Joyce's Kooking Korner articles in both the Hampton County Guardian and LowCountry Life for 30 years, gave her the opportunity to share her recipes with her community, family and friends. In 1990, Mrs. Horres volunteered and became an integral part of the Hampton County Watermelon Festival Committee. She and her husband were responsible for the creation of Family Festival Fun Day and the Taste of Hampton. She was an avid collector of all things watermelon, and her kitchen was featured in the Sandlapper Magazine in 1993. Joyce remained active on the WFC until she was forced to retire in 2005 due to health issues. Her love for her community could be seen by her participation on the Varnville Town Council, American legion Auxiliary, Relay for Life and as a Hospital Volunteer. She was chosen as Business Woman of the Year and Rotarian of the Year in 2001. She was a member of the Varnville Baptist Church, serving on many committees in the Church. Surviving are three daughters, Deborah Horres of Augusta, GA; Terri Wright of Warner Robins, GA; and Elisa Cummings (Mark) of Warner Robins, GA. She leaves behind one sister, Barbara Cook (Robert) of Beaufort, SC; and one brother, David DeWitt (Jan) of North Charleston, SC. Known as "Mud", she leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Jason Morrison of Warner Robins, GA; Chandler Cummings (Kim) of Lawrenceville, GA; Brittany Pratt (Marshall) of Warner Robins, GA; and Shelby Harsson (Skylar) of Strawberry Plains, Tenn.. Five great-grands added great joy to "Mud-Mud's" life; Lillian, Lucas and Peter Pratt; and Victoria and Kaylie Cummings. Mrs. Horres is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Aubrey Smith Horres; sisters, Anita Ellis, Gloria Priester and Patsy Lafontaine; and brothers, Sonny DeWitt and Wiley DeWitt. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 P.M. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Johnson St. Paul Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelley and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday at 1 P.M. prior to the services at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home. Terri, Lisa and Debby, I am so very sorry to hear about your mother's passing. Thinking of her brings back memories of her wonderful hospitality and warmth she shared when I was fortunate enough to stay with you all when I visited many years ago. First time I ever ate squirrel. I am thinking of you all and I am reminded that you three have each other and your children and grandchildren to carry on for. Such a wonderful family with so much character!! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
