Joyce Dillon Obituary

DILLON, Joyce On Sunday morning, March 11, 2007, Joyce Elizabeth Dillon left this world to embrace eternal life. A resident of Kiawah Island, South Carolina since 1992, Joyce is survived here by her husband, Thomas Dillon and her mother, Hortense McDonough. An only child, Joyce was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 25, 1943, a gift to her parents Francis and Hortense McDonough. A graduate of Kean College in Union, New Jersey, Joyce's diverse interests led her through a successful career path that included both business management and orthopedic nursing as well as a directors position in sales for the New Jersey Devils hockey team. But it was her love of animals and nature that brought her the most joy. A member of the USTA (United States Trotting Association) for more than 25 years, Joyce was a licensed trainer and driver of harness horses as well as an accomplished steeplechase rider. In addition, Joyce and her husband Thomas owned and operated a breeding farm for harness horses in New York State. Upon her move to Kiawah, Joyce was employed by KICA (Kiawah Island Community Association) and was a vital member of the Kiawah community. She went on to manage the office and operations of Solaris Properties. All creatures great and small benefited from Joyce's loving care. But to the bloodhound breed of dog, she was nothing less than a savior. Upon her retirement, Joyce became the Director of Southeast Bloodhound Rescue, working tirelessly to save and find loving homes for these abused and abandoned animals. In addition to her husband and mother, Joyce will be missed by her stepchildren Thomas F. Dillon and Patricia Coleman of Middletown, New Jersey, as well as her four grandchildren. A devoted family member, she will remain in the hearts of her aunt and uncle, Eleanor and Victor Fucci of North Carolina, as well as her aunt Louise Kern, nephews Victor and Frederick Fucci and cousin Megan McGrath Telente in New Jersey and her aunt, Sister Margaret McDonough of St. Mary of the Springs in Cleveland, Ohio. Joyce Dillon touched the lives of all those around her. With her love, her generosity and the joy she took in even life's simplest pleasures, her circle of friends reached far and wide. In spirit and in memory she will remain always in their hearts. In keeping with her love of animals, and as a celebration of her crossing the Rainbow Bridge with the creatures she loved so dearly. her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to continue her legacy, Southeast Bloodhound Rescue, c/o Janice Segren, Treasurer, 2917 Palm Drive, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. A service to celebrate the life of this incredible woman will be held at a later date. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Joyce. While I only had contact with her on two occasions, she is the reason that I have my beautiful bloodhond girl, Lulabelle. Joyce sent me the application and approved it almost three years ago and we have been nothing but grateful to her, the southeast bloodhound rescue and Amy at S.P.A.Y. Lee in South Florida. My utmost sympathy goes to her family and I am comforted in the fact that if anyone is in heaven, its Joyce. Best regards, Cory Bryson, Crystal Yount, Lulabelle and Duke

I just found out that Mrs. Joyce had passed. She was a wonderful woman. She helped us find Bubby, our 3 yr old bloodhound. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. We had a rocky beginning, but Mrs. Joyce was always available. She gave us so many ideas and a ton of advice. She will be greatly missed.

Joyce was an inspiration and a treasure. She was a guiding force for SEBR and I will miss talking to her and laughing with her over these tireless bloodhounds. Joyce thank you for helping my dogs get to me.

My rescue Edgar opened my heart to SEBR, but Joyce gave me the opportunity to help others experience the same love. I regret we were not able to meet in person. Having read about her life, we had so many things in common. Courage to her husband Tom, perseverance to my fellow volunteers and love to the bloodhounds in need.

Tom and Family:
My deepest sympanies are with you and your family with the loss of Joyce. She was such an inspiration to me when I recently lost my husband and this world will be lost without Joyce in it. I know the animals waiting at Rainbow Bridge will be thrilled to have Joyce join them.

I was so saddened to hear of Joyce's death. Her rescue web site, emails, and conversations on the phone has helped me to embrace this most delightful breed of dog. There is nothing like a bloodhound as our dog, "Gurl" (a rescue from Atlanta, GA) has taught us. It is amazing how one person can make such an impact on another's life through conversation. If you ever communicated with Joyce you could feel her enthusiasm and passion for the work she did so well. Our heart felt sympathy is extended to her family and friends and we pray that the void left will soon be filled with sweet and happy memories of a very special lady. Paula and Gregg Harrison

Joyce indirectly gave me a priceless gift named George who is now a 4 year old bloodhound trained and working in search and rescue for lost children and missing adults. It is with great sadness we lose such an unselfish, giving, generous person but it is with great honor we will carry out her wishes and legacy.

I was deeply saddened when I learned of Joyce's death. To Tom and her family and friends I want you to know how very sorry I am that she has left you all so suddenly. One of my first thoughts was oh my what a long line will be waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge. Joyce was an angel on earth, helping so many Bloodhounds to find their forever homes. We only were able to meet through emails, but it was easy to tell what a loving, caring woman Joyce was. She will be missed by many, including me.

Joyce and I became friends a little over a year ago. It began to feel as though I'd known her forever! I learned so much from her. I f it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have Boone, my beloved Bloodhound. She matched us up. We discovered later that we had horses in common too. She'd had horses with a trainer I'd worked for. I most likely met her years ago and didn't even realize it.
I will never forget her. She really influenced my life. She worked tirelessly to find good homes for Bloodhounds. I know she helped people too, because she sure helped me. I will miss her. My heart goes out to Tom , her dogs and the rest of her family. I will keep them all in my prayers.
