Joyce Marie Catlin COLLEGE STATION, TX - Joyce Marie Catlin (Barrs, Alge) passed into God's hands on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 after a tough battle with breast cancer. At the time of her passing, she lived in College Station, TX and was 82 years old. Her loving children were by her side. Joyce was born in Charleston, SC on October 24, 1940. She was the daughter of Robert and Frances Barrs. She grew up in North Charleston, attended North Charleston High School, and lived in the Charleston area for nearly all of her life. She and her late husband, Mike Catlin, were long-time residents of Summerville and lived there for more than 30 years. Her last job was at The Gazebo School in Summerville, where she was the director for several years. Joyce and Mike were married for 48 years and raised one son together, Danny Alge. She also had three children from a prior marriage, Gale Alge Fennell and the late Tom Alge and Kim Alge. Joyce and Mike moved to College Station, TX in December of 2020 to be close to their son, Danny and his family. Joyce's kids and grandkids were her heart and will be her legacy. She also had many fur children over the years, which she insisted were actually human. She loved few things in life more than spaghetti and sweet tea. She also enjoyed dancing, reading, playing piano, and cooking. Later in life she took an interest in gardening and was especially proud of her roses. Joyce was a Christian and was particularly impacted by the teachings of Billy Graham. Joyce was a strong woman and was courageous to the very end. Her strength, love, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her loved ones. She leaves behind two siblings, Earl Barrs and Valerie Hudson; two children, Danny and Gale; a beloved daughter-in-law, Amy Alge; eight grandchildren: Joey and Kenny Alge, Langdon and Hattie Fennell, Caitlin and Evelynn Alge, Jaime Griffin, and Tiffany Outen; many great-grandchildren; and a sweet fur baby, Allee Jo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sons, Tom and Kim, and her brother, Bubba Barrs. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the J. Henry Stuhr Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Rd., North Charleston, SC on Friday, August 4 at 10 AM. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Joyce be made to the Charleston Animal Society (charlestonanimalsociety.org/donate).
