Josephine Anderson Obituary

Josephine Blackwell Anderson Charleston - Josephine "Jody" Blackwell Anderson died peacefully Saturday morning, January 29, 2022. Jody's relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at St. Michael's Church. (Masks preferred) Jody was born on July 13, 1942, in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of the late David Leigh and Mary Guy Blackwell. She grew up in Charlotte, NC, and was a proud graduate of Myers Park High School, Saint Mary's College and The University of South Carolina. She married Ivan "Andy" Anderson in 1966 and enjoyed early motherhood in Winston Salem, NC. Jody and her family moved to Charleston in 1981 where she built an extraordinary life for her family. Despite success in that endeavor many times over, she rarely rested. Jody was a wonderful mother, passionate gardener and an entrepreneur who built two small businesses. As an energetic member of the community, Jody was President of The Association of the Blind, St. Philip's ECW (Every Church Woman) and of Century Club for a number of years. She also served on the International Heritage Rose Board. Jody was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Ivy Garden Club, the Junior League and was a faithful member of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study at St. Michael's Church. Jody had a lifelong love for Kanuga, where she started as a camper in the first grade, waited tables at the Conference Center and then later returned with her grandchildren. She loved the natural beauty of Charleston and Wadmalaw. Jody was adored by her grandchildren, who called her "JoJo". She spent many glorious weeks as a child, mother, and grandmother at Pawleys Island, where she celebrated her birthdays - including her last - surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of siblings, children, grandchildren and cousins. She is survived by her children, Thomas Anderson (Simmons) and Charlotte Parrino (Gene); grandchildren: Thomas, Heyward, Taylor, Kate and Corbett. Jody is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Coleman (Heyward); nephews, Heyward and Alex (Cozy); niece, Margot (Tony) and her great-nieces and nephews: Louisa, Chisolm, Sinkler, Marguerite, Aiden and Charlotte. Jody was such fun and lived her life for her faith, family and friends. Memorials may be made to Lowcountry Open Land Trust (for Wadmalaw), 635 Rutledge Avenue, Suite 107, Charleston, SC 29403 or to The Association for the Blind, 1 Carriage Lane, Building A, Charleston, SC 29407. I remember Jody fondly as I sat with her in her room in Myers Hall at Bishop Gadsden and as she shared many stories with me. She loved to attend activities. I also remember her sister as she often called or visited Jody. She will be missed!
