I had the privilege of meeting Ski when we were both stationed at Fort Hood Texas a couple of years before his retirement. My daughter and I also spent time with him and his children Sophia, Anthony and Laura when we rented a cabin at Belton Lake. His kids meant the world to him. The last time we had spoken he was his usual crazy self. He was between girlfriends but that was so like Joe the lady charmer he was. It seemed he was beating his cancer and was very happy. I lost touch with him and wondered why he wasn't answering my emails. Now I know. I am shocked, and sadden to learn of his death today right before Thanksgiving from another Military friend. He was one of a kind and I will forever miss my friend

Joe,
You are one of the finest Non-Commissioned Officers I have known in my 19 years in the Army. I will always look fondly on our time together in Korea. You taught me more about being a SIGO than anyone else in the Army. The things I learned while working with you- I credit with saving countless lives during my three combat tours in Iraq. Rest in Peace my friend you will be truly missed but your impact on the Army reaches farther than you ever knew. Godspeed on your final journey, I will miss you my friend.

I have fond memories of Sgt. Raefski (as he was known to me) I met Raefski in 1982 at Ft. Riley, Kansas; the home of the "BIG RED ONE". He was my section chief/ big brother. Being that I was the only female in his section he made sure no harm came to me. He was a very good friend to me. He made my transition in the Army smooth, he taught me the ropes.Rest in Peace, My Brother . I'll remember you always. ( Fredricka Frasier Charleston SC)
