Joseph Mizell Obituary

Joseph C. Mizell REEVESVILLE, SC - Joseph C. Mizell, 72, of 101 Whetsell Street, Reevesville, husband of Dixie Weeks Mizell, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at St. George Health Care Center, St. George, after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Reevesville Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial with Masonic rights will follow in the church cemetery. Joe was born in Charleston, S.C. on March 3, 1940, the oldest son of the late Burel C. Mizell and Beulah F. Mizell Evans. The family moved from Charleston to Dorchester, S.C. when Joe was a young man and he remained there until he married in 1964. He was a retired Maintenance Specialist with Holcim, Inc., Holly Hill, S.C. (formerly Santee Portland Cement Company), where he made many lifelong friends. One of his greatest enjoyments during his retirement was spending time with his former co-workers, reminiscing about "the plant." Joe was one of the founding members of the Reevesville Volunteer Fire Department and retired after serving ten years as Fire Chief. He was a member of Harmony Lodge #61 AFM. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed any task that involved "taking the tractor out." Joe also enjoying spending time at his son's store in Reevesville every afternoon, making jokes and sharing stories with a special group of men he lovingly called "them fellas." Pallbearers will be Evan Mizell, Ethan Mizell, Perry Chinners, Bevin Ammons, Steven Murray and Don Lawley. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Fire Fighters of Reevesville Volunteer Fire Department. Joe is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dixie Weeks Mizell; daughter, Sheri L. Mizell, both of Reevesville; son, Joseph W. (Joey) Mizell and daughter-in-law, Claire Shuler Mizell, of Santee; grandsons, Joseph Evan Mizell, Charleston and Ethan Taylor Mizell, Reevesville; granddaughters, Elizabeth LaClaire Mizell and Alexis India Mizell, Santee; sister, Vera (Kirby) Mizell Pendarvis, Dorchester and a number of much loved nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, brothers Norman E. Mizell and Edward L. Mizell and two beloved step-fathers, Bennie Cummings and Willard R. Evans. The family will receive friends at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George, Wednesday, July 18th 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at the residence. Memorials may be made to Reevesville Baptist Church, P.O.
