Joseph Mellett Obituary

Joseph Mellett CHARLESTON - With gratitude and love, we say farewell to Joe Mellett, who died by suicide in Charleston on Feb. 14, 2024. Born in Cincinnati on June 6, 1964, Joe lived a life of insatiable curiosity, adventure, and unconditional love, touching the hearts of every person and every dog he met. With a deep love and respect for animals and the ocean, he viewed the world through a lens of creativity and compassion. Joe started his first business at 17, eventually pouring his passion into projects such as The Circle and Bicycle City, antidotes for living and thriving in a challenging world. An early adopter of the internet, Joe's innovative thinking led to successful businesses such as education.org and tests.com, created to make education more accessible. Known for his eccentric and tenderhearted nature, Joe challenged the status quo while his endless questions sparked curiosity, creating lifelong, loyal friendships. Although he will be missed by many, his passing is especially significant for his loving partner, Becky Brown; his children, Kelly Ann McCarthy-Mellett, Will and Alise Mellett, their mother, Karen Mellett; and his dogs, Poppy and Toby. With Joe as our inspiration, may we live each day with kindness, acceptance, and empathy. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6th Street West on Folly Beach, SC, on Saturday, March 30th, at 2 pm. A no-host reception at Loggerheads Beach Grill will follow. All are welcome. Instead of flowers, contributions to the Charleston Area SC Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness or The Humane League are encouraged.

Sorry to learn of Joe's passing. Joe and I owned land that joined one another near Sandy Run, SC.
He was a pleasant person and I met him several times at the property.

I met Joe in 3rd grade so can only imagine the stories I can tell you. We literally grew up together and remained close friends for 50+ years. He was a key building block in my life. Joe had an innocence about him that will NEVER fade in my heart. My children have always called him uncle Joe. They are in their 30s now with children of their own. Even they cherish many memories and regard Joe as family. My wife Tina has grown to regard him as a family member too. Saying he will be missed is an understatement.

Because of Joe I will never say the word "oil" the same. I say it in my day to day life just as he did, it could just be a southern way of pronouncing the word. But Everytime I get to say it I smile and giggle a little. Joe has many phrases such as "you´ve really out done yourself" that make me smile and giggle. It´s so warming and sweet and just so him.
Also watching the three musketeers with him and watching him cry laugh. It was so infectious how could you not laugh with him.
Truthfully being around Joe makes you want to smile more and laugh more. You see him and no one can contain their joy.

My first memory of Joe was sitting on Beckys patio in Ashland, talking about life, depression, coping. Beginning of a sweet friendship. Chelsea
